Screen Flashing on and off.any help appreciated

I am relatively new to this and need help please. `i ve read everything there is to read, i think and can't fix this issue. Pi 3b. genuine hdmi to vga converter. sound via hdmi adapter.
my screen flicks on and off randomly.
ive tried all the config changes to no avail. I've swapped the config file from a working image to the image that has the issue and tried a different monitor but can't get to the bottom of the it. if anyone can pointme in the right direction i'd really appreciate it. -
So you have a working image that runs on the same hardware setup and then another image that has flickering screen issues?
Does the flickering happen while playing a game or while in emulation station? Or both? All games? All emulators you use?
Which config file did you try swapping?
One thing that comes to mind is that your //boot/config.txt may have settings in it such as overclocking the GPU or CPU that may be overheating or causing flicker issues.

@alturis thanks for the quick reply. it does it in game and in the menu screen (all games) It does it from first boot when everything is cold. Im stumped. one image is perfect the second one flickers/goes on and off randomly. I edited/swapped the config.txt file.

what's the working image, and what's the faulty image? where did you get them?
