Aimtrak Success?
-
Hi Folks,
So my Aimtrak arrived yesterday and, once Id used a windows PC to configure the gun to be a Mouse rather than a joystick it "kinda" works in advance mame - obviously after the requisite changes in the advmame-1.4.rc file.
I say kinda - the cursor is wooly at best, even after calibration, in Operation Wolf. Plus, for some reason whenever I try to map the trigger / gun buttons to controls in mame the results are just a bunch of directional mumbo-jumbo.
I feel like Im almost there with it - and I dont want to go the Windows route! Has anyone else tried a lightgun in RetroPie with any other emulator?
By the way, its awesome - I got the version with the SoV and sourced the correct PSU - very cool - props to Andy at Ultimarc!

i'm very curious on how this turns out! please keep battling at it!
can you post pics?

To use Ultimarc AimTrak guns or the Mayflash DolphinBar in an emulator, the software must support absolute mouse coordinates. By default, most of the emulators that have mouse support in RetroPie only utilize relative mouse coordinates. UAE4ALL2 seems to be the only exception. Absolute coordinates are also what's used for touchscreens, so keep that in mind when looking for compatible software.
Light Gun support has been a requested feature and is discussed here:

When I read this I was thinking that if you are mapping the trigger within the MAME GUI while holding the gun, small movements would send commands that the mapping process probably picks up. You might try setting the gun down and holding it solid so it can't move (or prevent it from seeing motion) and then map the trigger. That way, the only input received is your button.
Just a thought.

or prevent it from seeing motion
That's what I do when I calibrate my cabinet. I just aim the guns down, well below the sensor, as I map the buttons. Works very well.

Can anyone tell me what changes are needed in the RC file. ive been tryin to get my gun working in ADVmame for last few days ive not been having much luck.

It has been so long since I set up my Aimtrak I can’t remember, but I’m sure there is a post on this forum that will tell you if you search for it (I think that was how I found out).
When I’m back later I’ll also post the contents of my .rc file in case it’s useful

thank you in advance

No problem. I’ve been delayed so may not get a chance to post the .RC until tomorrow morning

Can you enter the MAME menu (you normally press tab on the keyboard to get into it)?
If so I believe one of the options allows you to turn down the sensitivity of the gun movement.
I think you can set the sensitivity from 1 - 100. I have set mine at 25. I think you need to set sensitivity settings for both the X and Y axis.

Hi. I agree that sometimes taking a step back can help.
I don't know what you have referred to in the past, or what guides you have read, so I post this in case its helpful.
The Retropie Docs offer some good guidance (link below), the bits on testing mouse inputs and determining mice index numbers might help.

Have you installed the gunconf utility? It could be the gun calibration that is the issue. this also lets you test the gun.

This thread (link below) has a whole load on informaton that is related to the issues you have had. I have provided part of the thread below which specifically mentions the sensativity issues.
I hope that helps, and I can try and answers questions if I can
