I recently learned that you can run ResidualVM on a Pi. Does it run like other emulators or do I need Linux or anything else?

I have finally decided to buy a 16gb microsd card and a 256gb USB stick now.

      Thank you in advance!

It is one of the experimental emulators that can be optionally installed as part of Retropie, but isn't there by default.

RetropPie runs on top of Raspbian, which is a linux distribution. The standard image you can download here includes Raspbian Lite, ie enough of the system to run RetroPie. It does not include the desktop, for example, though that can be installed through RetroPie.
