@VictimRLSH
I was only planning on putting about 50 games on the Pi, as growing up, my brothers and I didn't have much access to games or computers of any kind until about 2008, when we moved out of our families farm. So, really, there are a very small number of games that we had ever played when we snuck out to the movies or something. Given that it's a small list, would leaving it all in arcade be wise, or should I still plan to sort out which one goes in which? -
@ucald4amarine The console games need to be in their respective directories for the emulators to find them, but you CAN put all your MAME games in the Arcade directory. If you have console or computer games as well, you'll need to use the Favorites to get everything in one place anyway.

@rbaker you suggested putting the game files in the arcade section. As far as I'm currently understanding this, it seems to me that the arcade section may be the best place to put everything,
Everything arcade, as @VictimRLSH already explained. I just wanted to strengthen that information.
as it gives me all the emulations needed. Could you explain please why I would(or should) use the rest of them? (Mame, neo-geo, etc. Perhaps for game specific platforms such as snes?)
One scenario would be that you have games in multiple versions for different emulators. You could put the mame2003 versions in one directory and the mame2010 versions (edit)of the same games(/edit) in another. You'd have multiple MAME systems in Emulation station that way.
I keep the Neo Geo ROMs I bought from gog.com separate from the rest of my arcade ROMs this way.

Copy all. That's good to know then. Doesn't necessarily simplify my task, but it will be a good learning experience for me. (Which this whole thing has been) I'll have to put up a pic of the finished cabinet. Show that I do have some talents here.

@ucald4amarine Look at this post from me how to extract the roms from the GOG installer files. There also is a link to the ROMs on gog.com. All of them work on my RetroPie 4.4 with the standard emulator for the
roms/neogeo
directory, lr-fbalpha. (edit: As far as I tested them, but at least as far as some minutes into the game.)You may also want to look at the opening post of that thread, where @BenMcLean has collected many legal sources for various ROMs.

Im back! And... Once again, I have been running searches and attempting to fix on my own. But... Once again, Im stumped...
Ive built one cabinet. And it doesnt look half bad. Some things to improve on the next build, but its not all that bad. The software though... There is a issue with the sound, (I still have to go into the boot menu and delete the # sign and Get it to go through the headphone jack. So I think I may have the solution worked out on that.) But even though Ive gone through the retroarch section for setting up the 2nd set of controls, it hasnt fully worked out. Ill explain.
I go through the retroarch control settings, go to the 2nd player controls, and everything appears to automatically copy itself correctly. I am not able to make any changes to the controls anyways. But when I go In game to test, I find that the emulator now just takes imputs for both players through the player one controls, and only responds to a couple of imputs from the 2nd player. This is something that I havent been able to find a similar issue with through the forums at all.And 2ndly, whenever I boot up a fresh copy of retropie, everything seems to work great. (Excepting sound and the 2nd set of controls. ) But the moment I go into settings and try to set sound to anything different from stock, I lose all control in game. Outside in menu still great. But in game, I cant do anything at all...
Again, I thank you all for your time and efforts. -
i think for the most part, you shouldn't be going into the retroarch options and changing things at all. one of the major points of retropie is to automate all that stuff for you. if you start changing things, you're now likely overriding what retropie does for you, and this can have unintended consequences. you won't find many parts of our documentation that instructs you to start digging around retroarch and changing things.
if you have a second controller, you just add it within emulationstation just like you did for player 1. if it's the same controller model as player 1, you won't even have to do that - it will just work.
with the sound settings, what are you trying to change? what problem are you trying to solve in the menu?
-
@ucald4amarine Please add more details about what type of controller have you added to your build.

@Pepper We've been through this already - have a look at the rest of the topic :).

@mitu Sorry about that. i should have included it. Its a twin stick setup. Here is a link to the amazon site: EG Starts 2 Player Classic Arcade Contest DIY Kits USB Encoder To PC Joystick + 8 Ways Sticker + Chrome Plating LED Illuminated Push Button 1 & 2 Player Coin Buttons For Arcade Mame Raspberry Pi Games https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WGX76HT/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_1sc.BbCDKBS4X
Dankcushions, To answer your question, Im following the instructions for the 2nd controller through this page here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/ and thats where Im getting the retroarch lead. And like you said, it seems to match up with the first set of controls perfectly. But im not able to change it or make any adjustment to it to test it out. And finally, Im trying to run a couple cheap speakers with their own power supply through a headset jack plug via the PIE3 port. I know the speakers work. What I was trying to do in menu was simply set it to headphone vs every other option. Which then lead to none of the controls working in game.

From the descriptions, it looks like each controller has it's own USB cable, so they should be seen as separate gamepads.
As @dankcushions said, you shouldn't need to go into the RetroArch to configure the controller, if you have configured in Emulationstation the 1st controller, it should automatically configure the 2nd one. I assume they'll appear identical to RetroPie, so the same configuration would apply to both. This also means you'll have to wire the buttons identically - i.e. using the same schema to connect them to the encoders.
-
@mitu your correct. It does have its own usb port. But I cannot use the emulation station to make any movement or button controls on the 2nd gamepad. But, if I'm reading you correctly, I will need to rewire the 2nd controller to be a mirror image of the 1st controller, vs plugging it in haphazard style.

Correct, because controllers of the same brand and model only get one single set of controls saved by Emulation Station. So, if you wire them differently, your controls of one of them will be messed up (usually the second one, or the first one if you configure the second one after it).
it seems to match up with the first set of controls perfectly. But im not able to change it or make any adjustment to it to test it out.
I don't understand the second sentence. If they match up perfectly, what do you want to change or adjust? Do you want to setup the controllers differently? Thay may not be possible with controllers of the same brand and model (apart from re-wiring them differently), see above.
-
@Clyde because it wasn't working, I went into retroarch to see if it was mapped. After seeing that it all looked correct, but wasn't working. I attempted to remap the controls, just to test it out. No go with that. But! After rewiring the panels, it all works perfectly! Now just gotta plug in the keyboard and get sound working.

Hey, whadoyouknow, I'm not clueless after all !

@mitu here's another one for you: still cant get sound working through the headphone jack on the pie. I've tried to go through the dos menu and delete the pound sign. But... The monitor I have is blocking half of the code. And I have no way to adjust the screen size on the monitor. Ideas?

Did you use the
Audio
menu in the Emulationstation (from the RetroPie system) to set the audio output to the 3.5'' jack ? -
@mitu yes
