If means if you used the manual installation (over Rasbian) the image from retropie.org.uk/download or another pre-made image you downloaded elsewhere.
Test your joystick with either
jstest
orevtest
to see if your buttons and joystick are detected by the system. You'll need to exit Emulationstation and do this from the command line. If they're not detected, maybe the wiring is not correct. -
How do I do that? I'm very new to this.
-
need to press F4 to get to the command line. Then jstest /dev/input/js0, but it could be js1, js2, etc...
Note the spaces in this command otherwise it will not work. There is a wealth of knowledge in the search bar for future reference. I have learned pretty much everything I know from this site (Which I am still learning). -
@mariobros_54 See the docs. As @Pepper said, exit Emulationstation and type the command(s0 at the prompt:
jstest /dev/input/js0
or
evtest
Both will test how your controller is detected by pressing buttons, moving the joysticks around, etc.

@mariobros_54
No, you go to command line on the Pi while in emulation station by pressing F4 on your keyboard attached to the Pi. Do you have a usb keyboard to plug into the pi? if not you are going to need that. Also after testing you can go back to emulation station by typing emulationstation in the command line. You have to remember that the raspberry pi is a computer first and a retro gaming console second. Do you have any pics of how your controls are wired? -

@mariobros_54
jstest
should show you the key codes for the buttons and the axis movements while you press or move the joysticks.
Here's an video by @Floob that shows how this works -

@mariobros_54 What USB drive ?
-
The usb drive I'm using to put the games on the pi
-
@mariobros_54 If you're using the USB transfer method - described in the docs - then once the ROMs appear on your PI, you can delete from the from source (USB, laptop, etc.).
-
I've uploaded my first set of games. Played them. Deleted the files from the usb, now the roms qont play. Also (2), just started, theres no rom folder on usb drive. I've reformatted usb drive and reload pie mount. That didnt do anything same thing.
-
@mariobros_54 You said you used the USB for transfer. If you'd like to run the ROMs from the USB, that's another story. The docs have both methods covered - which one did you use ?
-
I'm using the usb method, if that what your asking. I'm new to this pi stuff, so I hope I'm picking up your lingi
-
@mariobros_54 can you be more precise - the USB method for transferring ROMs or for Running ROMs from an USB drive ?
-
Transferring roms. I transferred roms to retropie, deleted rims from usb drive. Roms wont load on retropie, now
-
@mariobros_54 Are the roms listed in Emulationstation ? Then it means the transfer was ok.
