MAME ROW #122 - Trojan
-
It's easy to write off most of the King of Fighter's series (or really most of SNK's fighters), but '96 is an exception. It's easily the best in the series by a mile. It has every character you could want to play, doesn't yet introduce the dumb concepts that eventually destroyed the series, and is very well balanced (a rarity for KoF). The art and music is all solid as well (though I think '94 might edge it out in music).

I didn’t even know there was an arcade version of Trojan! I remember playing Trojan for NES at a friends house and I actually thought it was a NES only game. It definietly has an arcade feel to it so it seems logical now. There’s so many games, can’t know all of them! And, thats what ROW is for, to try new stuff, isn’t it?! Trojan was really hard but managed to get to the last boss, don’t remeber beating him so might not have won the game. Never liked DD or KoF.. I vote for Trojan.

@pjft @AndersHP I was never a big fan of games of these type, played only very few. Since RetroPie, I saw a lot more interesting games in this genre and definitely will try out them in more detail. Unfortunately Double Dragon series never got me, but will try them out soon as they are important part of gaming history. I just can't imagine these type of games to play for highscores.
@Lyle_JP I'm still going with KoF98 as the best entry, but thats also because I grew up with this title mostly. Man, I love this series, until 2000 (including). Didn't play games made by Playmore, after they aquired SNK in 2001. As much as I like to play these games, I don't think they make a good highscore gaming session.
@m2306 I just discovered Trojan a few days ago for the first time and posted it in my hidden gem thread. So besides ROW, you may want have a look there too, if you are after games you never heard of. I think this is the right game to play for highscores, so my vote goes here.

@thelostsoul I played Double Dragon 2 yesterday for the first time and it is indeed, er... not great for this. It's a bit on the hard side.
@obsidianspider Can I change my vote to Trojan then? Maybe can I add a vote to the other 2 (to even them out) and then vote for Trojan?

This week's winner is Trojan

The difficulty is pretty extreme. Had a very hard time clearing the first stage on one credit but managed to do so. I couldn’t beat the Armadillo in stage two even though I spammed unlimited credits on the game. I will play more tonight but suspect that I’ll wont get past the Armadillo whatever I do..

I often enjoy reading the ROW threads, and for some I've been meaning to use them as an inspiration for adding control names to the MAME 2003-Plus re-mapper. Finally I have at least done this once, and added control names "Trojan" and its clones. Carry on folks!

Certainly a coincidence, but this was published yesterday:
Trojan

MAME ROW #123 is live

The King of Fighters series previously seemed dull, but since I set up a MAME cabinet I've found the fun again in tons of "one on one" 2D fighters.

@m2306 I imagine your score is the winner, should you want to post it. I only played it once last week, got about... 2300 points? I died shortly after fighting the two "twins" that approach you from both sides.
I didn't really think it was worth sharing that score at the time. Also, I was setting up my old PSP as a portable retro-gaming system, and that's where I played it.

@pjft I didn’t take note or screenshot as I thought someone else surely would beat me. This game is seriously frustrating. When playing something like this I always think about how unbelievable it is that someone actually beat this game. The Longplay on YouTube looks like a TAS..
