How to increase steering sensitivity on lr-fbalpha
-
Okay so for some reason Outrun will no longer run in lr-mame2003, which it used to up until a couple of days ago. I liked using that emulator because it showed the gear shift position in the corner and the steering was spot on with my PC gamepad analogue thumbstick.
So I try lr-fbalpha. The gears show but the steering is very off. The car does not steer far enough over left or right as it should do, as if the limit for steering is lower. lr-fbalpha2012 does steer correctly but I'm buggered if I can work out how to get the gear shift display to show in the bottom corner of the screen.
I'm not looking right now how to fix Mame2003, I've tried reinstalling from source and binary but neither works, I suspect something else has borked it when I updated all the binaries for Retropie. I'm only going to go down the route of restoring a backup of the memory card as a last resort because it takes bloomin' ages.
So can anyone either tell me how to increase the steering ability in lr-fbalpha (which incidentally also causes steering issues in games like Galaxy Force 2 and Chase HQ amongst other games), or how to make the gear shift display show on lr-fbalpha2012, which does work just fine for everything else?
Thanks!

@thestarglider did you try mame-2003-plus also?
-
@BJRetro yup, does not load the ROM.
-
Okay, so managed to get hold of a ROM that now works with MAME2003 but for some reason it's still a little stuttery, so I'd prefer to use fbalpha, so if anyone could help me how to either fix the steering or show the gear shift setting on screen that would be epic!

There is a core option named "analog speed" (which is analog's sensitivity) but it might not be what you are requesting ? Actually i'm not sure i understand what's your issue, turning left and right seems to work fine with an analog stick for me.
-
@barbudreadmon As I said in my original post (the title I admit is a little misleading), the steering in lr-fbalpha is not (for me) correct. On the first stage, at the first hard turn at full speed the car should be skidding as you try to turn. Because on my game the steering isn't turning far enough over there is no skidding and it just slides over to the far side of the track.
However on lr-fbalpha2012 the steering is strong enough and plays correctly - but there's no visible high/low gear indication on screen.
So my request is how do I fix the steering on lr-fbalpha (and it's not the sensitivity, the setting you speak of is on the max 10) so it actually turns fully left or right with the analogue sticks, or instead how can I get the high/low gears showing onscreen on lr-fbalpha2012?
-
@thestarglider The arcade version of Outrun had no visible gear indication on screen. Players could check by looking at the physical gear shifter on the cabinet.
-
@dudleydes I know, but several emulators do.
-
@thestarglider what controller are you using? I seem to remember some PlayStation style controllers having an issue where the full range of motion for the analog stick isn't detected properly.
-
@quicksilver so far I have tried an official Xbox One controller, a Speedlink Xeox Pro analog game pad and my usual go-to controller, the EasySMX wireless controller. All exhibit the same problem on lr-fbalpha, but are fine on lr-fbalpha2012.

Which is a bit weird, the analog control code in fbalpha2012 was backported from my work on fbalpha, the only difference i can remember is the missing "analog speed" core option which i added only recently (fbalpha2012 is basically always at 10). I'll investigate.

@barbudreadmon I appreciate that. Any word on what's happening?
-
@thestarglider I took a look twice, the second time this morning after someone opened an issue at https://github.com/libretro/FBNeo/issues/27, i still don't know what's the problem.
-
@thestarglider with the latest commits, you can get the tires to squeal.
NB : this is on FBNeo, you'll need to update your RP setup script and build the "new" core from source to get it. -
@barbudreadmon Okay so I updated FBAlpha to FBNeo, played the game, it's close but still not 100%. Yes the car now steers a bit better, but it's still not quite there in regards to strength of turn. For example when taking a fork in the road (and what happens depends on if you go left or right, I am using going right as an example here), yes the wheels skid and smoke when turning but the car is still moving a little too fast to the outside edge of the road. When you then hit the next turn before joining the next stage the car should only be drifting very very slowly to the other side of the road with no skidding. The car is drifting too much.
Another game that is suffering badly is Chase HQ. The car is barely controllable with analogue sticks, it hardly moves, and since the update, it's actually gotten worse.
I also tried adjusting the sensitivity range from 1-10 and it seems to have no effect to the turning ability of either Out Run or Chase HQ.
To show you what I meant, I have made a video for you, recordings from both FBNeo on the Pi to MAME64 on the PC (which is how I've always known the steering to be, and just how I remember it in the arcades - I even played on real hardware only a couple of weeks ago and it's the same).
I hope this helps.

@barbudreadmon oh and again, I still tested Fbalpha2012 and although the visual guide to the high low gears are not there, that still runs perfectly.
-
@thestarglider i pushed another commit an hour ago, it should be fine now.
-
@barbudreadmon Yup! Out Run is now absolutely perfect! Thank you!
Chase HQ is now back to slightly crap for turning, but I'm not too fussed about that - it was more of an alternative driving game to test the steering with! :D

Thanks for the heads up

@thestarglider Waiting for your logs on github, in the first place if you don't visit github regularly, you probably shouldn't post issues there.
