At a complete loss after googling for a few hours. I have learning nothing new except what you see below:

The genesis to USB adapter available over at RetroUSB.com works on Windows just fine. It sees 2 axis and 8 buttons. Using a MK-1653.

On my retropie (on raspberry pi 3 b), MODE, X, Y, Z are cloned inputs of START, A, B, C.

I went into the cli and jstest shows the device on js0 as "RetroUSB.com Genesis RetroBox" with two axis but only 4 buttons (BtnA, BtnB, BtnC, BtnX).

How can I get linux to see the other four buttons of this controller?

I had to add usbhid.quirks=0xf000:0x0008:0x100000 to /boot/cmdline.txt and then reboot to get the missing buttons working.
