The new Raspberry Pi 4 is here!!
-
if there's a better model than pi 3, it's pi 4. If it can run N64 almost perfectly, then it just might support Gamecube (in a future model).
-
@TheRetroGamer From trying a few early/nightly lakka builds and whatnot, n64 runs like poo :)
I'll have a definite answer when the retropie team releases their build. -
@Darksavior Not sure why you are having issues with N64. I watched a video where someone used an unofficial port of Retro pi and played through some games. The N64 was much improved even on this unoptimised build with unoptimised emulators. Saturn was about 8 FPS though. Dreamcast was much better too. Once things are worked on I imagine that N64, Dreamcast and to some extent Saturn should be playable. I doubt Gamecube will as that is still glitchy on my i7 SFF build with a 1050ti.
Here is the video for those interested. The guy doesn't seem to know about FPS because he thinks that saturn emu is about 30FPS. If it was it would be playable but at least you get to see that there is improvements from the faster hardware.

The lakka nightlies are better than whatever custom build that person's using.
-
Really cool to hear the nightlies are working great!!
I don't have a Pi4 yet, but I want to get one, however... it would be wise to wait for a revision I think. (The USB C port stuff) -

The USB C port issue is barely an issue at all. It only affects "e-marked" cables which most people probably wont be using. The official RPI adapter works just fine for me and only cost $8.
-
@quicksilver Yea I really appreciate the official psu being widely available at online shops here in the US and with an $8 price tag. Not many shops have the pi3 psu and it's more expensive.
-
I hope someone collects the ~$900 bounty to add a dynarec recomp to mednafen psx beetle. It's the better emulator and has better compatibility. A pi4 oc'd to 2Ghz can run some 2d games near fullspeed but 3d games like mgs are at like 50fps. It ran a protected japanese game, cardcaptor sakura tetris, without the cheat patch. Haven't done much testing with more, though.
This is on the nightly lakka build. I don't code so not sure just how unoptimized it is.
-
@quicksilver Im very picky about how the power adapter looks and what the length is and all that.
I will more than likely be using non-official stuff just like I did tons of times with the Pi 3.@Darksavior Do you think a dynarec recomp would make it work nicely without overclocking?
-
@jrb555 I’m not a dev so it’s just a guess. I’d say yes, just because 3D games are around 10fps away from being full speed.
-
Got my PI4 built and ready to go.. waiting on the RetroPI build to support it!
-
Hey, does anyone here use that 240p mod for the Composite output through 3.5mm?
These worked well on the 3B and 3B+, but I remember the + model required an update for it to work, and Im wondering if it works on the Pi4 or if we're gonna require an update for it? -
Hi all. I am late to the Pi party, but just received my first ever Raspberry Pi, a 4Gb V4.
I'm super excited to get started on making a RetroPie arcade machine, using my old X-Arcade Tankstick.
Without any suggestion of putting any pressure on the RetroPie devs - whose volunteer work I really appreciate - can anyone give me a sense of how long it might be til a RetroPie for the Pi 4 becomes available?
Thanks in advance - and lots for me to learn to learn in meantime :)
-
@Appogee sorry mate, there is no WIP-Status or anything similar to get an idea when the next Retropie will be released.
You are one in a million waiting for it ;) -
Won't be long, that's for sure! The changes in hardware are more complex than expected but there's tons of progress :)
-
Heads up to everyone who's waiting on retropie,
Lakka already had an officially supported build (a precompiled image at least) for raspberry pi 4 and am currently testing it out.
Doesn't take advantage of any new features like GLeS 3.0 but still seeing amazing performance in every game I've tested so far. Banjo-kazooi is at full speed with no audio bugs, and currently majora's mask is at full speed with no audio bugs.
This is without an overclock either, but I do have a heatsink and fan.
Just saying if you're interested, Lakka is a pretty good alternative at the moment.
-
@Bearwynn is there away for anyyone to get hold of this build? I'm holding off on a pi4 for the moment just because there isn't a build for me to use. I have a 1tb nvme usb drive and it takes forever to boot on pi3.
-
@dobsonatorx Lakka nightly that support Pi4 have been around for some weeks. Just google for them.
-
@dobsonatorx literally just search Lakka raspberry pi 4
-
Can you add games to Lakka via USB stick like RetroPie?
