ES concurrent box art & screenshot

I've been trying to replace videos with screenshots on my custom (carbon-based) theme and it appears that ES refuses to load two images per game.
Before I post code that (I think) I already understand, I'd like to ask if ES is limited to one static image per game. If so, why does that limitation exist?
What I'm trying to do is replace the videos on my GPi setup because they're making things really sluggish and I would rather use screenshots instead.
Please note that I do everything manually in a painstaking way, scrapper box+snap sets are out of question since I have very customised collections with my own 3D PAL box art, etc.

The
md_image
tag in a theme does exactly what it's meant to do - shows an image of your choosing. You can't show 2 images within the same placeholder, similar to how themd_video
/md_image
combo works. -

I had to add <marquee>./marquees/, <image>./images/ AND <video>./videos/ on each gamelist (duplicated multiples via regex) even though there's no video folder.
The presence of the video field enables for a marquee to be loaded instead, when <showSnapshotNoVideo> is set to true.
