Five favorite ARCADE games available in MAME
-
Too young to have been part of the mame era, but here are the top five I have found while testing on retropie. Not entirely sure about the order.
- Money Puzzle Exchanger
- Mile Smile
- Joust
- Don Pachi
- Pang 3
-
@langest "...too young..." Right now is the MAME (emulation) era. You may have been too young for the original hardware, but it's out there if you look for it. I believe Go Go Mile Smile! was released as Susume Mile Smile! in Japan and it's a great single-screen game. Don Pachi is good, but so much slower than the rest of the series. And Joust is just a classic.
-
Susumi Mile Smile! is the version I have on my machine.
I'll make sure to try the rest of the Don Pachi series.
Thought I would lurk this thread for good suggestions. :) -
@langest You can find out a little more here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/games/franchise/1588-dodonpachi
I really enjoy danmaku/bullet hell arcade games and CAVE makes some of the best. Psikyo is my other favorite for arcade shmups. A whole lot of CAVE games (and danmaku games in general) were released on Xbox over the years. -
@IanDaemon What is the filename for Espgaluda (or DoDonPachi DaiOuJou)
I might change Pang 3 for some versus Puzzle Bobble action.
-
@langest I'll get the ROM names and emulator versions after work tonight and let you know what I'm using with my set-up (RetroPie/EmulationStation/RetroArch/RPi 3B+).

@IanDaemon
That's great!
Thanks -
@langest A great place for suggestions are these "threads":

Not really a thread, but a collection of threads:
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/category/16/mame-random-of-the-weekNot all about arcade, but various emulated consoles on the raspberry pi:

The admins may feel this thread is redundant, but I'm just stirring the pot and keeping people talking about games. My intent is to generate interest in emulation and build a healthy community through opinionated conversation.

The Speed Rumbler
Bosconian
Tempest
Robotron
Elevator Action -
@langest I love Bubble Bobble too, but I feel the NES version is much more of an improvement on the arcade so I didn't put it on my arcade list.
-
Golden Age favorites:
City Connection (JP version)
Pengo
Missile Command
Vanguard
Arkanoid -
Of the top of my head, Five favourite games I played in the wild/ games I remember the most from summer vaccations and the smoky shady backroom at the local videorental:

@VictimRLSH said in Five favorite MAME arcade games.:
Bubble Bobble
Not bubble bobble. Puzzle bobble, also known as bust-a-move.
-
@Dipkid Have you gotten Night Slashers to run well on the Pi? Just curious. It's a cool game that runs in MAME, but on my Pi setup it's "stutter-y". (I can't remember if it's isolated to the video or audio...or if it's both.) Should I be overclocking? I'm not sure if it's worth it. I don't want to do damage to the board with overheating.

Paperboy
Bubble Bobble
Shinobi
Flying Shark
Night Slashers -

We now support Night Slashers in MAME2003+ and i have it on good authority it runs pretty good due to the older driver having speedups present to boost up
the games performance, one of my faves this game jump stomping an enemy midair driving em into the ground then kicking their head off never gets old :)EDIT i forgot i added the same speedups for the DECO32 games to the Final Burn Neo core a while back so you might wanna try Night Slashers in that emulator also.

Puzzle Bobble / Bust a Move
Metal Slug
Windjammers
Frenzy
Phoenix -
The local "Giant Eagle" (grocery) had a Rolling Thunder upright in the late 80s/early 90s and the local "Pizza Hut" (restaurant) had a Pac-Man cocktail cabinet. (Those two are burned into my memory although not personal favorites. They're good, but didn't make the list.)
City Connection is fun. (And I hate that cat.)
Robotron 2084 is a classic and awesome with a twin stick set-up.
All the Metal Slug games are fun even with the one-hit kills.
