Need Help with Exporting Roms to RetroPie
-
I'm trying to download roms onto my MacBook so I can transfer them onto my Raspberry Pi 3 through the network, but every rom I download seems to not be done correctly. They get saved as either (and I'm not very tech savvy so sorry if this is a little confusing) a blank piece of paper or a piece of paper with a zipper. They're able to go onto the Pi itself, as for an example I tried downloading and exporting Paper Mario for the N64. Loading up the Pi after the transfer I can see the N64 system in the menu but when I try to load up the rom it just fades back into the menu. Is it an issue with the how I'm downloading the roms (as in using an incorrect website or method?)
-
This usually means the ROM file is not correct. I'm guessing the file name is correct - so EmulationStation sees it - but the contents are not. Try with another ROM and if it's zipped (has the zipper icon), then unzip-it first and copy the archived content to the
n64
ROM folder. -
@mitu Is there a specific way I should unzip the file, because that's something I sadly don't know how to do. And if I can unzip it, what archived content should I look for?
-
@MarcuFinx76 Here is what I see after downloading the roms
-
*.z64, as well as *.v64 or *.n64 are the valid roms for the N64-Emulators.
The only differnce is the Hardware they were dumped on.
Of course i cannot see the checksum, but the way "Paper Mario (U)[!].z64" looks it should be fine (GoodROMSet).I dont know about the compability and perfomance of Paper Mario on the Pi itself, i use an everdrive on real hardware.
I remember that it was not playable with Project64 on Windows, but i tried it about 15 years ago :) -
@sirhenrythe5th That worked, thank you very much. All roms seem to be working except the psx. I put SCPH1001.bin into the bios folder (in the spot shown in my screenshot) and put Crash Bandicoot.7z into the psx folder. But when I try to load it up it goes back to the game menu. Is the scph being put into the wrong place or something else?
-
@MarcuFinx76 unzip the package, for PSX emulation you will always need the umpacked files (CUE/BIN, pbp, img, etc.)
-
@sirhenrythe5th I get this. Is there a specific way to unzip it?
-
@MarcuFinx76 he was referring to the
.7z
file of the game, not the.bin
file (which should stay as it is). Use a program - like The Unarchiver - to unpack it. -
@mitu Ok then. I unzipped the .7z file and got these two files. The .bin file won't show up on the pi's system select menu, while the .cue does show up but can't load up the game
-
@MarcuFinx76 said in Need Help with Exporting Roms to RetroPie:

That's fine, only the
.cue
file should be visible, but both files should be present in the folder. Do you have them both there (in thepsx
rom folder) ? -
@mitu This is what the psx folder looks like. Both are in there but trying to load it still brings me back to the game menu
-
Try putting the bios file in the same directory. Sure, it's SUPPOSED to go in the BIOS directory, but the default BIOS directory location seems to change. It might work if you have it in there with the rest of the roms. (This worked for me until I found the right spot for BIOSes to go, which wasn't the documented directory).
-
@Thorr69 I'm assuming this is what you mean, but it sadly doesn't seem to change anything Where exactly did you end up putting the bios file?
-
The BIOS location is fine - but you should check 2 things:
- the BIOS file is correct - run a checksum utility like
md5
over the file to verify it's correct (see the correct checksum at https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Playstation-1/#bios). - the
.cue
file is correctly referencing the.bin
. Open the.cue
file with a text editor and make sure the name contained in it is exactly the filename of.bin
file. Linux is case sensitive, so if the.cue
file contains an different name (likeCRASH BANDICOOT...
), then it won't work.
- the BIOS file is correct - run a checksum utility like
-
@mitu I'm sorry to say this doesn't seem to have helped. I'm still experiencing the same outcome. Here's what the .cue and .bin files are named
-
@MarcuFinx76 Then we need to know more about your system.
Add the information asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first and try to get a log file from the emulator (/dev/shm/runcommand.log
) to see if we can spot any errors. -
@mitu Ok. I don't know much of the system as I purchased the pi through a Canakit package. Here is the link for it on Amazon;
https://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-Starter-Premium-Black/dp/B07BCC8PK7/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=28174IN8UZ7XI&keywords=canakit+raspberry+pi+3&qid=1584908687&sprefix=canakit%2Caps%2C371&sr=8-1-spons&swrs=8DDC80F352B31245BA309525BD32413D&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyTlI2WUZDWkZFQzVJJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODU0Mzk1MUNZRkxRNDQyNVFLQiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNzYxOTkyTFo5NENZVEVSWTFaJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
When I got the kit I put it together and simply started porting roms onto the pi. No other changes have been made since then -
@MarcuFinx76 Which RetroPie version have you installed on it ?
-
@mitu It says I have version 4.4
