Brand new Pi4 2GB, controller works in Estation, not in actual games

I've just gotten a brand new Raspberry Pi4 2GB w/ 32GB microSD. The controller works fine in EmulationStation, but when I run an NES game, nothing works.
I'm using a SNES-lookalike USB controller, and I've mapped out all the buttons available in the setup. I've tried ROMs for Super Mario Bros. (world) and Super Mario Bros. (Japan, USA). The game launches fine but the only button that seems to work is the 'A' button, nothing else is responsive.
I have yet to try any systems other than NES.Any help would be appreciated.

The configuration for the controller should have been saved in
\\retropie\configs\all\retroarch-joypads
(file shares location), in a.cfg

It took me a minute to figure out/find what you were asking for, since I'm using a Mac, not a PC. FYI, the Linux directory is /opt/retropie/configs/all. Here's the file.
That's not the file I was asking. FWIW you can use the macOS Finder and open the
\\retropie\configs
using a similar step as shown in the docs for transferring ROMS:if on macOS, open Finder, select "Go" menu and "Connect to Server". Type smb://retropie and hit "Connect".
You posted the RetroArch's configuration file, but there should be a
retroarch-joypads
folder in/opt/retropie/configs/all
where the controller configuration is saved - this is the file we're after. -
I GOT IT! thanks for your help. It occurred to me that I must have done something utterly stupid, so I started from the beginning, going back to the original install and now that I knew just enough to be dangerous, I took a more direct path to get to the point where my ROM could be loaded. The game works now! Thank you! I just have to figure out how to get OUT of a game once I get into one.
