Games crash on startup and return to game select
-
Hi,
I've just installed a fresh image of a custom retropie on my raspberry pie 4, using PINN. Installed that 64GB image to 128GB USB flashdrive with plenty of free space.Retropie starts good.
When I try to start a game, it does start for like 5 seconds and then it crashes and I'm back to the game select. It's the same for any game system.
When my son first tried his first game, right after the first boot, there was a blue screen with options we could choose from. I'm not sure what he did in there, so maybe that's the source of the problem.
Now when we start a game, there's no option screen. It just starts to load the game and after 5 seconds or so the game crashes.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

@Jaimie2485522 sorry, we dont support custom/3rd party images here. In fact we cant: nobody knows how this image is configured but the creator
So you have 2 options: either ask the creator (usually they are called "super hyper mega image by da cool boyz from da hood" or something like that), or install the offical image from here so we can help you

I've found the solution myself.
In case it would help someone else, here's how I've fixed it.
I went into the Retropie Setup menu and selected "Update". This updates the Retropie system to the latest version. During the installation it asked 2 times if I wanted to replace some configuration files. I did choose "install the package maintainer's version" : So that replaces the currently installed configuration file.
After the update script finished, it was stuck to a black screen with a bunch of text that moved on the screen but it was always the same text repeating. After waiting an hour or 2, the same text was there. So I've powered off and started back the Pi.
Now the games load great!!! Nice.

This is the reason that only the official install is supported here. Whatever the update replaced configuration file wise was at fault it would seem.
Always better to start with the original and best 😉
