RE/SET: 100 SNES Games for your RetroPie

@pjft said in RE/SET: 100 SNES Games for your RetroPie:
I have a weird relationship with actually "playing" games these days, as I don't have a lot of free time and as such I tend to collect the games and add to my backlog for future reference. I know that I likely will never have the time to actually make progress in the backlog, but it's good to keep the dream alive :D
I couldn't agree more, you perfectly described my current state.^^
Some notes from my sides. The listed Parodius is the second game on the SNES. There is a third one is Jikkyō Oshaberi Parodius and the only one exclusive to SNES. I really really did want to include this game instead, but it did not run well on (very slow) my Raspberry Pi 3 back then. I hope this makes your backlog even more frightening. :D
Gun Hazard is a single player game most of the time. Only when you have a second companion at times, s/he can control it. So, don't put this game too high on your list of multiplayer games. There are 3 Fire Emblem games on the SNES. And sometimes you only read the Japanese title, so you might have the game already, but not with the translated titled.Regarding the Romhacks, I enjoy them too. It is like playing a DLC for these old games, so cool. The manual scraping part is a bit annoying and the reason why I really think twice which games to include. At least this translates automatically into a curated list. I already have a few such scraped infos and should upload them someday. Actually a good idea.

It could be interesting to add the average time to beat the game with a hyperlink or a reference to https://howlongtobeat.com
For exemple 5 hours for ActRaiser
https://howlongtobeat.com/game?id=191This is not a criticism, because your document is already wonderful !!
-
@DTEAM This is actually a good idea. The "rating" link (average user rating) from gamefaqs.gamespot.com include an average playtime (14h for ActRaiser). I thought about to include this one. But the actual time to beat (the webpage you linked) is also very interesting.
I already discovered "bugs" in the document and may make an update. In example the text for Batman Returns is wrong. This happened when I moved the games. I think the playtime or time to beat or both are really cool to know and will be integrated directly to the page somehow. But only if for most games are such an information available.
Should I just update the document silently? Sadly many people downloaded have the wrong one and most probably won't know the new version. -
@thelostsoul You should create a revision like : RESET-100 SNES Games Quality_rev1

Gradius 3 has recently been 'patched' to remove the severe slowdowns in game - see https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/05/28. The authors's work has sparked the interesed in similar 'patches' for othe SNES titles, like Megaman X or Contra III.
-
@mitu Yes, I am aware of it (found out just recently) and already listed them on another blog post about romhacks. I knew of Gradius 3 and Contra 3 patch, but didn't know about Mega Man X. But I won't add or change any game, because the way the document is organized would require to change a lot of things associated with it.

Is this the second player bot? :p
@Kellanx said in RE/SET: 100 SNES Games for your RetroPie:
Read via it and it used to be a simply pleasant list - will probable refer returned to it! I used to be completely satisfied to see Magical Pop'n there, as properly as Hagane and Final Fight three with the point out to the bot as the 2d player, and to discover some different hints I did not have on my list.
@pjft said in RE/SET: 100 SNES Games for your RetroPie:
Read through it and it was a really nice list - will likely refer back to it! I was happy to see Magical Pop'n there, as well as Hagane and Final Fight 3 with the mention to the bot as the second player, and to find some other recommendations I didn't have on my list.

@thelostsoul does look like a poor implementation of one:)
-
@thelostsoul this is fantastic! Thank you for this.
-
This is great! Thanks for putting it together! Do you think you'll create one for other systems like Sega Genesis/Mega Drive?
-
@obsidianspider No, at least not at the moment. The biggest problem is how time consuming it is to write the little essays and to read reviews and watch videos about the games (especially with language difficulties). I would love to do it, maybe in the future, maybe not in the scale.

Update!

- a few PDF meta descriptions added
-
@thelostsoul
Thanks for the Update !! Nice work ! -
@thelostsoul very cool! :)
would you mind to tell us wich software you used to do the layout on that pdf file?
-
@meleu Ah yes off course, its the free software Scribus, a desktop publishing tool similar to the likes of InDesign and QuarkXPress. I had to learn it from scratch, just to make this happen. :D
It started out as a regular LibreOffice document and just a week later I switched over to Scribus. Evolution with screenshots from previous states:

I reread your document and it's still great a year later. Awsome work!! I take the liberty of bringing this post back in the spotlight because there is a lot of work in this document and it can be useful for those who missed it the first time.
-
@dteam Thank you for the kind words, this means a lot to me. Initially I had plans on doing more with other systems too, but the way I did it was too much work for me and a lot has changed in my private life too. The plans are still there, just with little bit less of scope. As for this document, off course there are things I would have done differently now. But that will always be the case. And did anyone notice the starts at the last "Thank you for reading" page are clickable links to some websites?^^ So guess this makes them to Easter eggs.
Just for the fun and sake of discussion, what games did you miss on the list? Or what games does not belong to it in your own opinion? How many of you are on Raspberry Pi 3 or older?
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
