Mortal Kombat Plus+ Compatibility
-
Upon further testing, it appears FBNeo plays MK games in general inaccurately, not just MK Plus. I loaded up lr-mame2016 on Pi4 and played regular MK2 and UMK3, they performed WAY better than FBNeo, both sound accuracy and fluidity. This seems promising to me then because perhaps MK Plus can run just fine in lr-mame2016 with a Pi4.

Yes, it has been mentioned a few times, and i think mame2003 and mame2010 got their own issues on those games. You need a recent version of mame to play those games accurately.
-
The guys over at MK Plus are interested in getting it going on lr-mame2016. I will update this thread if I find they updated the core to support it. Right now they have an updated Mame2010 core that can be used in Retropie but I am not sure how to compile an alternate core and replace the lr-mame2010 build available. Can that copy of lr-mame2010 be added to the list?
-
Did you get this running I patched mk2 and umk3 ROMs from 2003,2010 and 2016 romsets and I got nada
-
@gorgar19 not sure your source but I do have working roms of MK2+ and UMK3+ that work [inaccurately] on FBNeo. I also downloaded their official patch files at the MK Plus website and their custom Mame core and was able to get it running on my desktop PC. I do not believe anything that comes vanilla on Retropie aside FBNeo will work right now. As I said regular original MK2/UMK3 roms work fine on Mame2016 with a Pi4. The MK Plus team does NOT provide the parent Mortal Kombat roms.

sound accuracy
Could you elaborate on this ? I don't hear any sound issue in FBNeo, if anything i prefer MK games's sound in FBNeo because i don't have to go into service menu to up the volume at first boot.
Also, the MK frame skipping issue in FBNeo was fixed. -
@barbudreadmon the sound for MK2 and MK3 in FBNeo was a little faster than normal. I can just hear the difference between Mame and FBNeo. It sounded "off."
-
@GreenHawk84 hmm i'm not sure it's faster, it feels faster but i was comparing with the following pcb video and everything seemed in sync.
However i agree the music sounds different in FBNeo, maybe something about the balance.
Edit : no, the sound is slightly faster indeed

Is there a way to improve this core compatibility?

zxmarcos, the author of those FB drivers, has started working on them again recently (hence why the frame dupe issue was fixed), afaik he is currently working on improving his tms34010 cpu interpreter used in those games.

Just an update on this, I have not seen anything come from the MK Plus team in terms of Retropie/Mame2016 compatibility. I know Mame2016 runs MK2 and UMK3 very very good on my Pi4, so it's just a matter of adding support. I really hope it happens, I'm even willing to throw a donation at it.

if they upload the source code for their mame fork then it can potentially be included in retropie. or if they can provide the MAME patch then we can see the changes and maybe backport them to 2016.
-
They are already supported in mame2003-plus and have been for a while. FBNeo as well.
-
@zerojay true but Mame2016 is superior than both of those cores for this game.
-
@GreenHawk84 Superior how?
-
@zerojay I know FBNeo got some inaccuracies on mk2 (the audio sync is slightly wrong, and iirc some frames are glitched in intro), iirc mame2003 got its own issues with mk2 (was it missing shadows ? i don't remember exactly). If there are other issues on FBNeo with mk games, i'm unaware of them.
-
@barbudreadmon @zerojay FBNeo runs the game a bit choppy and sounds strange, while Mame2016 is butter smooth. Mame2003 is also missing the coin entry sounds, at least off the bat I noticed, so I think Mame2016 would be more accurate.
-
Are you guys using mame 2003 or mame2003 plus? Mame 2003 plus has the mortal kombat plus games added and working out of the box for a bit now. I know cause I added them to the official core. I do not know how that translates to the retropie version.
Once the game is patched using the instructions and is named mk2p and umk3p, they will work.
I am usually the guy working on adding the game to various mames. I added them to a custom version of mame 2010 awhile back and that showed me a few things.
-
the only older mame libretro core worth working with is mame 2003 plus. I could add the game to mame 2016 but its purpose is to be a snapshot in case the newest version does not work. So whether it gets optimized or not is questionable. It does get commits here and there, but 2003 plus has a solid dedicated team, partly because it is the most compatible mame core. Games and features get backported all the time.
-
per above, mame 2010 is barely a working emulator core in libretro. its a trainwreck, hence I do not plan on adding the game to any other snapshot cores.
-
Do not use FBNeo. things mentioned above have been accurate. The game is included in FBNeo. Midway emulation is far from mature yet on the platform. I am sure this will change down the road, but I have tried it on Windows 10 64 bit and it does not work well, so I would avoid it at this time.
So give mame 2003 plus a whirl and see if that experience is any better than 2003.
I wont be adding the game to any more cores for the time being. If you want to add any game to mame, Get the source code, search through it for every time MK2 is mentioned, examine it and add MK2+ in the same fashion. Theres like 4 or 5 files that need edited in mame to add a game. Driver files for the machine and mame.
Enjoy!

Hello @Zoltan45, I can play MK2+ without issue on Mame2003-plus, but my UMK3+ ROM does not work but it will run on FBNeo.

You mean it has slowdowns or something on your setup ? That's weird, i just checked and it was faster than mame2016 on mk2 (marginally though). And as far as video goes, both emulator seemed in sync. Only the audio sync seems wrong, and some palette issue happening for 1 frame during fade-outs when they tell mk story in intro.

I wouldn't call it "far from mature", except if there are issues we aren't aware of apart from the 2 i mentioned on mk2 ?
