@AdamBeGood I completely forgot I'd already put them up.
Well I'm sure we'll figure out the problem eventually. To be honest I'm starting to think I spend more time tinkering on my pi than actually playing it ^^I was looking through the RetroPie/RetroArch BIOS packs, and tried all of those I think. I really don't get it.
@Folly Hope duty goes well. Here is a verbose log: https://pastebin.com/kJz5Grum
Looks like all your filenames are bad !
Forget what I said about the filenames.
Edit : I have the same sort of log though.
Can't help you now.

@AdamBeGood Your font.rom is different? Are you getting any japanese text in, say, Popful Mail?

It might be just as likely to be the font.bmp, but yep I do get text in text boxes in that game. That is one thing my PC98 can do.
Edit: Yep, it's the font.bmp file. I just deleted all my BIOS, loaded the game. No text. Just copied over font.bmp, there is text. There is a text.bmp file in one of the RetroPie BIOS zips I think.
-
@AdamBeGood Some games have text, you might have been lucky.
All the games that depend on the FONT.ROM to output text have been broken on my end.
When you're free any chance you could check a couple for me?
I've looked into the font.bmp, it looks like it's an anex86 bios. -

I've looked into the font.bmp, it looks like it's an anex86 bios. But it has to be that FONT.BMP on this game! When it wasn't there, there was no text. When I put it in to the folder there was text. There was never a FONT.ROM to make the difference.
Have you tried putting it into the BIOS folder just to see?
-
I'm looking into it now.
Can you share the md5sum of that file please? -

@AdamBeGood My file is not a match.
However, I'm just wondering - are you running the game from floppies or from a hard disk? -

My whole problem is the hard disk thing. Floppies!
-
@AdamBeGood I suspect that's why your Popful Mail has text and mine doesn't.

Maybe.
Just for the record, I downloaded some BIOS pack for PC98 at the start of all this, and that font.bmp was in an Epson PC-486HX section within it, if that helps you. I don't mind sending it on to you if you want it.
Edit: I have the same BIOS files as @Folly now! Well, not the sound ones, but I can't imagine it is falling over on that. I think I might raise a new post. I am sure you guys are bored of this now.

@AdamBeGood if you can figure out a way to send the file to me without breaking the rules then that'd be great yes! ^^

Hmm I probably can't.. I don't even know where it is from now, beyond the details I gave you - so it will be tricky to give you nudges to where it was.
I mean it is just an image, does it even count? Hmmm
-
@AdamBeGood Don't worry about it. I'm going to try some floppies first, see if I have better luck.
In the meantime I'm looking at gameplay from a Sharp MZ-2500 and I'm salivating with envy.
I need this thing on the Pi.

Turns out I really like games with Borders, who knew?
I probably will look at PC88 once I'm through my PC98 hell.
-
@AdamBeGood I'm going to get to work on the MZ series. They appear to be supported in mess.

Saw a few issues and commits on github.
So installed lr-quasi88 from source.
It adds a sub_cpu_mode . this has to be set to always use both CPU. in core option q88_sub_cpu_mode = "2"Fire Hawk will also start now !
NICE!
I've dipped my foot in with PC88. Final Crisis and Wibarm work fine. Thexder 2 is black screening though. Does you .m3u go 1-5 or should there be a different order?
I've changed the RetroArch settings, I haven't looked into BIOS checksums as yet, struggling to bring myself to do that just yet...
-
@AdamBeGood I can't get Thexder 2 to work. Even with an .m3u it asks for a game disk.
Are you sure Final Crisis is running right? Check Folly's screenshot for comparison. If the colors don't match you have a BIOS issue.Wibarm looks excellent. I think I'll play it once I finish SD Snatcher.

https://flic.kr/p/2k3Fy1E - this looks okay doesn't it? I get black screen with Thexder which bothers me a bit, if you are getting something different.
-
@AdamBeGood Yep, that's fine.
Thexder works on my end, Thexder 2 doesn't.
Are you sure it's actually a black screen? Some of these games take ages to load.
You may have a bios problem if it is but honestly quasi88 is more hit than miss in terms of compatibility I think.
