Well, nothing fancy - it wasn't much effort. If you make the change in RetroArch->Options and then go to Save Game Options file at the top, it will save specifically for that game and no others. :)
;-) perfect.

Metal Force works.
Choose "Speak Board" as sound board in options. -

@folly I just started Metal Gear 2.
Damn that game is hard.
I'm enjoying it but the guards are relentless, once they've spotted you they don't stop chasing you until you're dead.
I've just beat the first boss, I'm going to play a bit more.Edit : Sega CD and PC88 restored! Rebuilding is kind of exciting.
Speaking of Sega, were you guys aware that they released two computers, the SC3000 and SF7000. Supposedly they run through mess and through the regular SG1000 core. I'd be curious to see what they're like

Step by step. Time consuming but you get there.

We ought to have 48 hour in one day. :)

@folly Even that wouldn't be enough! ^^
I finished the following section in Metal Gear 2. The silencer makes the game significantly more approachable.
Edit : Got the FM Towns working! I played Genocide Square ; the first game feels a lot more playable than on X68000. I see the future - I'm going to spend most of my week getting games working for this system...

@Folly How did you know to change the soundboard for Metal Force? There were loads of options there.
There are .hdi files such as that of "Policenauts" that can be "ctrl+c"ed. In doing so you get into DOS.
So now we can see the files with "dir".
Earlier on I made a .cmd file with both game .hdi 's.
Most of those .hdi 's , when booted have the "sedit" program in the "c:/dos" directory.
With this program you can edit and view .bat files. ...............etc.
When I discovered it was a sound driver issue I looked at the sound boards in options.
When looking at all the sound boards I saw "Speak Board".
This "name" was in the filename of the game like this (Speak Board).
So this is how I discovered it.With "Policenauts" I did the same thing.
I removed the "umb entry's" (upper memory block) in autoexec.bat. Then the game worked. (with the correctly made .cmd) -
@Zering
Are you playing an IPS patched version now of MGS2 ? -
@folly No I'm playing a non modded .rom. Saves don't work which is annoying but it works well enough. I'll probably patch it before long. I only wanted to try it quickly and ended up spending an hour on it.
@AdamBeGood I don't know about exclusives really, there seems to be some really good shooters. I'll let you know what I find out.
Alltynex doesn't work on mess. Mess won't boot the hdd version, or chds. Isos and bin/cues start but then get stuck in an infinite loop on the initial basic screen. Shame.

It's got Monkey Island 2, which is my favourite game ever. I don't think it is any different from the PC version though.
Real shame on Alltynex - that is one of the big exclusives for sure.

@adambegood There are other great games, thankfully. For starters I'm never touching Genocide on the X68000 ever again. The FM Towns version is a lot better.
If you do make the leap bear in mind performance can be sketchy, it appears to be pretty intensive on the pi, but I think most games should work well.
Edit : I've never played any monkey island games. What's the best system to experience them on? The Amiga?

PC I think... I don't think the Amiga version of MI2 was any better. PCs had Soundblaster cards by then so sound was just as good.
I'll wait for your findings on Towns, it'll take a tiny bit to convince me to get busy. What is better about the Genocide version?

@folly That is great work, good investigation tips there! Must have been satisfying.
I've got a .HDS of Die Bhanwelt on X68000, a bootable HD. I wonder if that can be tinkered with in the same way.

I don't have the .HDS, so I can't try.
I have .dim and made a .m3u.
Game looks nice :

@folly I played that one. It's a good candidate for translation on the fly as it's pretty fun and seems light on story.
-
@zering Ok. Will play that a little bit more.
@AdamBeGood If you want to tinker then you have to use
Human 68k, it's like DOS. -

Human 68k, it's like DOS.Cool, I found a translation patch but it doesn't work on my disks, or any others I can find.
Then I found a .HDS, already patched. But no joy with that.. yet.
