pi4 redream lags major
-
games would dip from 60fps down to 40 at times. so gameplay and audio lags badly, i updated retropie script, removing and re adding redream. i even manually went far to download off redream website and installing it via winscp but still no dice..
my pi is stocked and not OC’d
sd card is a evo 256
im not sure if i should wipe my card clean and start fresh? -
90% of my Dreamcast games run fine with no major framerate dips
My Raspberry Pi 4 is Overclocked.
-
@dreamcastkid never tried overclocking on my pi’s but do have a cheap heat sink and fan on my 4, ive heard the usual
“will have a shorter life span”
or
“that you may need to up the voltage on the power plug” (are these true? 😅)anyways if i can get a good constant 60 fps, then ill probably give it a go if there is no other way
-
@rocknflip What video settings have you got redream on and which games are you trying? Depending on the game it works best at 720p or 480p for the very intensive games (e.g. Shenmau)
-
@retropieuser555 i leave it on
1280 x720
4:3
frameskip auto
vertical sync oni notice if i lower 1280x720 down, i get a blank screen but audio still running
i just want to play fighters like capcom vs snk 2, powerstone series, super street fighter 2 turbo etc.
so far naomi via ‘flycast’ has run decent on powerstone but ive seen videos of gamers showcasing a constant 60fps on marvel vs capcom 2 usin redream, how the hell? lol -
Hi Redreamers!
I used the latest official stable build before (1.5.0) and was happy, as some games (i.e. Rez and Ikaruga) worked well in double resolution on my Pi4@2100MHz.
Today, I installed the latest Redream binary and noticed some problems:
- Redream crahes when I exit the emulator
- There are slowdowns/screen tearing issues
The latest Redream build has a "per game config" option, which would be very helpful as not too many games work with double resolution, so that would be nice to have.
Has anyone else noticed screen tearing or the crash on exit?
edit Wishful thinking: My Pi was way too fast @2100GHz

Could someone tell me about compability of redream on Rbp4?
I have nearly 40 images of dreamcast games on my android phone which i play thru Redream for android.But on retropie i have half of them totally worked games and half - just running, show all intros and menus, and as gameplay begining, after 1 second games are crashes an exits.
First I've supposed that deal is in image's format. But no - some .gdi are not worked, some .cdi - randomly. Cause redream on retropie in experimental section ,so i decided to test it on reicast an they are work!
Then I found tests some popular games on youtube that had crashes on me like Soul calibur - crash on character select screen, both Crazy taxi - crashed at gameplay starts and ecco delphine - crashed too. And on youtube they are worked on redream on retropie
So what the problem? And what i need to tweak to get them work?
-
That's strange ..
I only have 35 Dreamcast Games on my Raspberry Pi 4 (including Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, Ecco etc) and they all run at full speed and no crashes at all using Redream.
-
@dreamcastkid
Yap, and crash become when gameplay started....
( but on the phone those image are well,so i though maybe some glithes are happened when i transfer them to sd on Rbp4, and then i trying to test on reicast an they still good)But i still didn't overclock my raspberry -could it be reason?

really ? Reicast is old and buggy and no longer developed for
try lr-flycast ... https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Dreamcast/
flycast can also run 95% of Atomiswave and Naomi Model 1 Roms almost perfectly.
Yay, More games to play ! :)
-
@dreamcastkid I mean it!) ( reicast\flycast, i thought they are same... and old).
So, what you think about redream? What can be reason of crashes?
-
@iga I had some problems with redream, too! I updated Redream sometime last week. First of all the performance was worse than before (especially at higher resolutions) and redream crahes when I press on exit.
I downloaded the stable RPi4 binary (1.5.0 from last year) and put that into the
/opt/retropie/emulators/redream/
folder and have no issues since.I'm missing on some cool features, though. Namely a per-game-config and a VMU memorycard manager, but at least it's fast and stable!

@ecto Oh,MAN! THANK YOU ALOT!!!
I've install retropie nearly 3 weeks ago ( and redream from it release too). As it turned out my redream version was v1.5.0-476-g928919491 and it's crashes and i dont get why..... and broke head what a problem ( sd, bad dupm, overheating, default clock, bad revision of retropie and more)
This relise (1.5.0 totally work.
Thanks again! -
@ecto awesome man! for me i had to go darkside and overclock to get the speed i desire on pi4 regardless the little brat is doin its thing now 😅
-
@ecto Hi could you tell me how did you do this? My marvel vs capcom 2 is really laggy when i call a partner or dual specials, other 3D games are mostly ok.
Should i uninstall redream from retropie and then copy the files through winscp? Thank you -
@ogroto
You just have to download the latest stable release and copy the contents of the archive over the installed files (with any ftp client I guess). Don't uninstall redream!
I'm not sure if the executable flag will be erased if you unpack on windows and then copy it to retropie. Probably the best would be to copy the archive and unpack it on your retropie.If you want to revert back to the latest build you just have to update the emulator with retropie_setup. I guess the latest builds now have some features that are just too painful to miss (vmu manager, per game config and WinCE support)
I haven't used my retropie in a long time as I was occupied building a Kodi-Box with an Odroid N2+ ;) -
@ogroto you should report any issues with redream here https://gitlab.com/inolen/redream
The developer is very responsive and does his best to maintain good performance on the pi.
-
Thank you both. I am indeed having a blast with redream, except for MvC2. Lowering the internal resolution from runcommand to 800x600 has almost the same issue, if you call your partner or do a double special the game almost hangs. I did my own .chd rom.
Guess it is not worth a report to the developer, just my own unexperience in the matter. Also running a stock pi4 2gb, maybe it is not enough. In the other hand, the flycast naomi rom works great, almost no dips and plays 55-60fps constantly -

MvC2 is one (I get the same lag when calling in partners or doing supers that you do). Sonic Adventure 2 and the NFL 2K games also have very noticeable lag (City Escape in SA2 is quite bad, for example). There's really not much to do except wait and see if Redream gets some Pi-specific optimizations in future updates.

Get the Naomi version of MvC2 lookup the char unlok code and play it on lr-flycast.
no stutters
