If you are using the controller wired, it is probably in X-Input mode. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the xpad driver through RetroPie-Setup -> Manage Packages -> Manage Drivers, then rebooting the Pi once you are done.

Plus the USB 3.0 ports on the pi 4 are blue

It's really, really easy to make it yourself via the official images. You are responsible for the content as well as your own hardware.

Pre-made images will never work fine for anyone, you'll always need to keep fixing things and you'll end up frustrated.

Don't forget that pre-made images can be dangerously overclocked destroying your CPU (or at least your guarantee) and could contain malware such as crypto miners.

Stay away from them and do it yourself :)

What are you using to SSH in the Pi? You should be using Terminal, comes pre-installed on all macs. Open terminal and type: ssh pi@192.168.5.25 (but use whatever your Pi's IP address is) password is: raspberry

the writing is linux loading. it is important to see what it says as it will show any errors etc here.
