OK, I think I know the answer but want to confirm:

When ES says that two controllers are detected, hold down any button to configure, I hold down a button on the player 1 side and walk though the configuration. I move my joystick up for "D-pad up", I move my joystick down for "D-pad-down", press a button for "start", press another button for "select" and etc.until I have mapped every button and the joystick as needed.

Do I need to do the same for Player 2?

The controller for player 2 is wired identically. and both sets of buttons and joysticks are detected when I go to terminal and execute Jstest for each (JS0 and JS1).

No, if they're identical (same name) they share the same configuration. Configuring the 2nd one would just overwrite the same configuration again, so there's no need to re-configure it.

          Thanks.

          That's what I thought.

My second set of controls doesn't work with lr-mame2003 any really any other emulator (i.e., NES, N64, etc.). They do work with ES.

Mame/ES does detect both sets of controllers when I start a rom. However, when I hit [Tab] to configure, Mame doesn't detect them. And when I try and play a game it doesn't detect them either.

No 2 player start or anything....puzzling.

@peetem Post a verbose log from the emulator on pastebin.com, on the topic you've started for the controller issue. Run also - from the command line -

            cat /proc/bus/input/devices

            and post the output.

Sorry for the pic. I'm not sure how to capture and drag the output from my Pi to my Mac.

I would add that I have two DragonRise controllers, a USB Mouse (e.g., spinner), and USB keyboard connected.

I changed out the controller board for the 2nd player with another DragonRise just to see if it was the problem. That wasn't it.
