ROMs appear but will not load

Pi 4 powered by canakit, Retropie 4.7 from Raspberry Pi imager
Retropie loaded and everything seemed to be functioning as expected, Kodi even installed and ran smoothly, transferred ROMs over with WinSCP, restarted, ROMs appeared and under the correct system, but when I selected them the system dialog message popped up to say the ROM is loading and that I can press any button to configure, but after a few seconds it disappears and sends me back to the list of ROMs for whatever console I am attempting to play. It does this for all ROMs. I am a noob so please explain anything to me like I am an idiot who has never done this before, because I am.

Which systems? When I had a similar problem, it was because of a missing BIOS file, so you might want to check to see if you have the right BIOS files for the affected systems.

@gomineko It was happening for all the systems I have at the moment. SNES, NES, N64, and NDS
