How Many Bios Do I Really Need?
-
Putting together a list of systems I want for my next build, and I'm working on the CD based ones now. Thus far, I have PlayStation, Saturn (doesn't run great, but will load) and Sega CD. Being disc based, they obviously won't even launch without the proper bios (which I currently have). But I was wondering how far I should take this? I've never used bios for regular cart consoles before, but I think there are sets I can find for just about every system. Should I include bios for each system in the bios folder for improved compatibility in some way? Or is that really unnecessary (as I've never had issues in the past). But I don't mind, if it could make things run better/smoother overall.

@alphabetapie each system's docs page tells you whether or not BIOS are supported/required. putting BIOS when the emulator does not support it is pointless.
there is also this list: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/BIOS/

Thanks, very helpful. I always noticed the per-console sections, but didn't realize it had the bio info there as well (you have to scroll right to see it).
Looks like I'm good on bios as-is, as Saturn, PSX and Sega CD are the only ones I need. However, it did say that the NES emulators need disk bios. But I assume that's because they also emulator Famicon Discks? And if I'm just using regular American NES roms, I should treat that as an "optional" bio like the rest that list it this way?

ya, that's right - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Nintendo-Entertainment-System/#bios - only required for FDS games
