Game override setting not saving aspect ratio

Hi Everyone
I have set my aspect ratio for the core at 5:4 which fills the screen on my viewsonic monitor. But for vertical games I want to set it as core provided. I launched the game and went into the Retroarch set up and changed it to core provided. Then I selected save game override and it says it saves. Loaded the game back up and it's still full screen? What am I doing wrong?
