Pi Model or other hardware: Raspberry pi 0w
      Power Supply used: Vilros cable
      RetroPie Version Used:4.7.1
      Built From: from the website
Controller used: Nintendo switch pro controller
How to replicate the problem: Boot up Raspberry pi and connect controller. The controller connects correctly and the pairing lights show it is connected, but it does nothing.
One workaround: Open terminal, or any other screen than the game list with a keyboard/controller, and close terminal, then the controller works fine.

        See:
        https://joaorb64.github.io/2020/04/08/using-nintendo-switch-controllers-on-linux.html

By installing the hid_nintendo driver and the joycond daemon/userspace driver, my Pro Controller doesn't give any more trouble, either wired or wireless. I have a RPi 3B+ though.

@protocultor I already installed joycond and everything it says from the retropie docs, I'm still having issues
