bluetooth: org.bluez.error.notavailable Switch controller

I'm running the latest pre-built image for the RPI 4/400 on an RPI4 (4gb) fresh install.
Joystick - BEBONCOOL Q44A

https://www.beboncool.com/q44-switch-controller-upgrade-copy/Following this guide:
https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Nintendo-Switch-Controllers/First, emulationstation doesn't even pick it up when wired - unless there's a trick I don't know about?! Please advise on this point (Windows picks it up) and it has 6,650 4.5 star ratings on Amazon and I'd LOVE for this affordable controller to work).
When I go to retropie settings and enter the bluetooth pairing, it finds and pairs the controller as a "Pro Controller".
Then when security method starts, (So far I've tried methods 1-3) it blows out into some filenames and the last line is the bluez error org.bluez.error.notavailable
At that point I'm left having to ctrl-alt-delete as there's no way back into the menu or emulationstation etc.
When I get back to the menu and view connected devices I can see it is a registered device but no active connections (assuming due to the failed security thing).
Note: on original boot I had to configure keyboard as joystick because no way to get to the bluetooth menu's since joypad not recognized via usb even after installing all of the software from the guide.
Not sure what could be wrong as the reviews seem to indicate it flawlessly works as a switch controller, no idea why it won't pick up on retropie (when wired it says gamepad detected but thats as far as I get even holding the buttons in the guide).
Any help would be appreciated. I'm building this setup as a gift for someone who's been waiting for it :(

Try updating RetroPie and the OS/packages to the latest version and re-try the pairing via Bluetooth.
