Attract-Mode set mode error
-
Hello, I am trying to get attract mode to work in a raspberry pi 4. It has:
Linux raspberrypi 6.1.31-v8+ #1654 SMP PREEMPT Tue May 30 17:18:56 BST 2023 aarch64 GNU/Linux
and on top of that RetroPie script. I tried installing attract mode as an experimental package. All seems good from logs. Packages are in place, but when trying to run it I get:
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ attract Attract-Mode v2.7.0 (Linux, SFML 2.5.1 +FontConfig +SWF +Curl) avcodec 58.91.100 / avformat 58.45.100 / swscale 5.7.100 / avutil 56.51.100 / swresample 3.7.100 Config: /opt/retropie/configs/all/attractmode/attract.cfg *** Initializing display: 'Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator' - Loaded master romlist 'Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator' in 33 ms (4705 entries kept, 0 discarded) - Constructed 1 filters in 0 ms (4705 comparisons) Failed to set mode: Permission denied /usr/bin/attract: línea 12: 80943 Abortado LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/opt/retropie/supplementary/attractmode/sfml/lib" "/opt/retropie/supplementary/attractmode/bin/attract" "$@"
Not enterally sure if this is a problem related to the installation here or the frontend itself. In any case I am posting it here to see if someone else had the same issue, or maybe some one can show me the way.

What OS/release are you using ? Are you starting AttractMode from the desktop environment or from a terminal session ?

or from a terminal session
Hello. I am using Raspberry Pi OS, based on Bullseye, 64 bits.
I have tried to do the same as I do for Emulation Station, from the desktop environment, open a console and execute it from there. -
On a Raspberry Pi, running from the front-end (EmulationStation/Attract-Mode/etc.) from the desktop session is not supported. You need to start it from a console terminal, without the desktop started.
Also, keep in mind that Raspi OS bullseye support is still in beta at the moment. -
@mitu , is that so? Without the desktop env? that is new to me. Is there a wiki page or official documentation about attract mode? I have just founded some forum posts, with images containing already tuned packages and all that stuff. But I could not see anything about running this on top of an already running OS, as my case.

Installing RetroPie on-top of Raspi OS is documented in our docs.

@mitu not Retropie, but the Attract Mode front end. There is no mention, nor guide or nothing about it. I now it is experimental, but still I cannot find anything official about it.
Also, for the record. Emulation Station works just fine from the console. Maybe it is supposed to start at the beginning of session, but it has been never the case here. Just start and stop when it is needed. That is why I got the other front end error.
Will try to disable the regular boot path in favor of the front ends here and report back. Thanks

The installation instruction are linked from the Attract Mode project site - https://github.com/mickelson/attract/blob/v2.7.0/Compile.md.

Not sure about the other front-end, but if you manually install RetroPie, you need to configure EmulationStation to auto-start at login, as detailed in the documentation page I posted earlier.

OK, booting to the front end worked as expected. I can even get out and start the other one from console. Great.
All these years I've been running Emulation Station from the Desktop Environment. I guess now it should work even better, since there are several components that don't get to start.
@mitu thanks for the support!
