What emulator/system to use?
-
I built an arcade cabinet with built in joystick and 9 buttons. The goal for this project is to play about 10 games from my youth like Moon Patrol, Montezuma's Revenge, Boulder Dash, River Raid, etc. I had those back in the days and played them on Atari 800XL though almost all those titles are available for other systems like ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, etc. I am not sure about MAME though. So far I was able to find only Galaxian and Moon Patrol. Anyway, this brings me to my question: What emulation system should I go with? Honestly, I tried Atari 800 under Retropie and Batocera as well as ZX Spectrum and Commodore and I failed miserably trying to setup the joystick to launch and play games. I guess those emulators are setup for keyboard. There was always something that didn't work (i.e. I was able to launch a game but not go back to the Retropie). I am really trying to setup only 1 system with about 10 games. I need something simple to setup and use. As hardware I have Raspberry Pi 2 and 3. Any help is appreciated. Here is a photo of my cabinet with the controls.

For Atari800XL, take a look at https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Atari-800-and-5200/.
If you're using the libretro core (lr-atari800
), the joystick should be configured automatically once you have configured it in EmulationStation.Your screenshot shows an arcade system though (MAME) on Batocera (?, definitely not RetroPie). If you wish to use the arcade versions of those games, then look up the input configuration for the arcade emulator you use (
mame200
,fbneo
,mame
, dunno what Batocera has configured by default). It also helps if you're using RetroPie, if you're using Batocera then maybe post in their forums. -
@mitu Thank you. I went thru the link you mentioned. I think I can follow the instructions on how to set it up. The main problem I have is how to configure buttons that I have available. By default, the emulator looks to be set for keyboard so I need to reprogram all the buttons and the joystick as the keyboard is not connected to the system. I just don't know what options to set for each button so I can launch a game, play it and then come back to the emulator to select another game.
As to the screenshot, it is Batocera but I am just trying things. Have same problem with button setup in Retropie as well.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
