hello, i'm backing up the retropi SD with Win32 and i'd like to backup the parts that aren't empty space. The thing is, I don't know if all my stuff is solely within the allocated partitions or if it's also inside that large unallocated section that Windows doesn't know how to recognise. Plus, my Retropie SD card is massive, I don't currentely have a giant space SSD to back this up in. If I choose to backup only the allocated data, is that okay?

You can't backup just the allocated space with Win32Imager, it doesn't know about it, it will make byte identical copy of your SD card's contents without knowing what's underneath. Pishrink can remove the empty space from the existing image.

I am using w32imager and 7zip to compress the image. From 15 GB, it's shrinking to ~ 5 GB.
