Cannot Connect to RetroPi
-
Excuse my ignorance but how do I do that? I'm still very new.
When I setup the Pi I used my user name "rlg" and a password I use all the time so I doubt that would be the issue but I will try it I just dont know how
I can't tell you the Os I am running as I'm downloading retro pi assists at the moment I know " the latest version" according to forms isn't a good answer but I insatlled and updated to the latest version one thing I did do was change the backend to x11 from Wayland as I heard that better and it also allowed me to fun at 1080p 60Hz as Wayland had me locked at 1024

Exit EmulationStation (i.e. no Reboot/Shutdown from the menu) and you'll be at the command prompt, where you can execute the command I posted.

OK, so when you connect (SSH or FileShares) use that user and password. The new RaspiOS versions don't have a default username anymore, so unless you chose
pi
as the username during the 1st boot-up (and you did not), there's nopi
/raspberry
user/pass available.I can't tell you the Os I am running as I'm downloading retro pi assists at the moment I know " the latest version" according to forms isn't a good answer but I insatlled and updated to the latest version one thing I did do was change the backend to x11 from Wayland as I heard that better and it also allowed me to fun at 1080p 60Hz as Wayland had me locked at 1024
I don't understand a thing. Use proper phrasing and punctuation and we'll be able to parse the info you want to convey.

@mitu I got it working! but now I have a new question that maybe you can assist with so I went into the roms folder and populated them with roms but none of them show up to play anywhere on the menu.
I put roms in the respected folders Nes roms in Nes folder etc I've rebooted and everything but they won't populate for me to play

How exactly ? Please tell, so that future users searching for the same kind of errors here in the forums will know.

Make sure the ROM file(s) have a supported extension. The docs have the list of supported files by system listed.
-
@mitu Yes they are supported file extensions for instance my Nes Roms are .nes
I fixed it by fully disabling my PC's third party firewall and also if your ISP is spectrum and you're using their default router you need to turn off their 'AI threat finder" once I turned that off the Raspberry pi was allowing me access via the IP address

Did you install a NES emulator, with this being a manual installation ? Was the
nes
folder present before you copied the files or it was already created ? -
@mitu all the folders were already there when I went into the directory as far as I know I have not installed any Emulators I though they were all included with emulationstation or retroarch
in retropie setup I did install all main packages

No, they're not included with EmulationStation/RetroArch, but if you installed the 'main' packages section, a NES core should be automatically installed and the
nes
rom folder created (which it was).
Can you post the output of the/etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg
file (you can see it via WinSCP) on pastebin.com, just to make sure it 's correctly created ? -
@mitu Pastepin is here
-
File looks fine. Are you sure you've restarted EmulationStation after copying the ROM files ?
-
@mitu yes sir I have reset it about a million times now
Main menu
quit
restart emulationstationIve tried shutting it down a million times too it just simply is not working
I've also watched about 12 hours of YouTube videos and theirs "just works" There has to be something wrong some setting or something because mine just simply isn't working and I don't know why as far as I know I've done everything correctly so it should work but it isn't and its driving me insane

Exit EmulationStation, then start it with
emulationstation --debug
. Post the resulting log file (from/home/rlg/.emulationstation/es_log.txt
) on pastebin.com and provide the link. -

After you exit EmulationStation, you'll be left at the command prompt, where you can input the command (
emulationstation --debug
). -
@mitu Paste bin is here
From the looks of it its claiming there is no games but yet I have games in correct DIR and the correct file format?
-
Can you try resetting the permissions on the roms folder, as explained in the docs and restart EmulationStation ?
-
Done
Still the same issue
Honestly, I've wasted too much time on something that I was led to believe was easy to set up. Even you are stumped.
I got my Raspberry Pi on Saturday it is now Tuesday I've since then spent over 40 hours on this in forums, YouTube, etc I'm about to just return it to Amazon.
All I wanted was an emulation machine with retro achievements and this just isn't it. It's very clear to me that this doesn't work it might be user error but I have posted everything you've asked and you say everything is fine and should work.
I am out of ideas and so are the countless hours of YouTube videos I've watched
I'm starting all the way over from scratch hoping I missed a setting somewhere
-
It would have been best to use a supported Pi platform, like Pi3/Pi4, instead of a Pi5, which doesn't have an image available and is still an a beta supported platform.
-
The YouTube video you posted suggests using Pi OS with Desktop, which is incorrect. Could this create issues? Did you use this image?
-
@mitu I got it working!!!! all games are found and loading just fine so far I am now Scrapping all the games for box art
