Forum Tournament Round 2: We're going to Plaid
-
@lilbud obvious. But i wont say since im not playing.

I hope that more people will join us this time. Anyone can participate, so the more the merrier 😊

This inspired me to start messing around with MAME and wow, New Rally X has some annoying music.
I also decided to check out Phoenix from last week and found that I had to use a different emulator (lr-mame2003) instead of the one that worked for New Rally X (lr-fba-next). I can see why MAME causes so many headaches for people who aren't used to fiddling with things.
No, I don't want to rub your helmet…

Hey guys! Just sharing an usefull info (it can be quite obvious, but I didn't know it until today):
If you get the "Special Check Point" first, all the others will worth twice. The "Special Check Point" is that flag with a S and is blinking on the map.
After knowing this my score increased. ;-)
-
@obsidianspider I tried the nrallyx in lr-fba-next (0.173 romset) but I had some glitches (missing pixels, specially on the score, which precludes the use of screenshots for showing my score). I'm using the mame4all version (0.37b5 romset) and everything is fine.

Fun fact; 'Rally-X', which uses the same music heard here, was the very first game to include background music tracks. To quote Rufus from 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure'; "They do get better".

To be honest I'm not even sure ho to check the romset version, and I've not really looked into it. I popped it in the "arcade" folder and it's pretty much "just working"
I haven't looked into getting loads of games all at once, I just get them one at a time. -
Hey guys, I think we should put some things very clearly here. Just like @Lyle_JP said in a Round 1 post, we must say the number of lives and the difficulty.
I'm practicing with 2 lives and medium difficulty. Can we put it as a rule?

I don't know how you set difficulty, I was just playing with one credit, which I think is four lives.
-
Factory settings for New Rally X is 3 Cars/Easy. We could use that setting or all agree to use 3 Cars/Medium if that's too easy. 2 Cars is not enough game, IMO.
Also, Factory setting for Bonus lives is A (first bonus life at 20000, then at 80000).

Maybe @lilbud can do some of those polls with all the options:
1 Car, Medium 1 Car, Hard 2 Cars, Easy 2 Cars, Medium 2 Cars, Hard 3 Cars, Easy (default) 3 Cars, Medium 3 Cars, Hard
(I could do it, but my company proxy blocks traffic from/to http://www.strawpoll.me/)
And maybe we can add some info on how to change dip switches on RetroPie's MAME versions (TBH I don't know how to do it yet...).
-
In Mame2003 and Mame4All, you need a USB keyboard. Use the TAB key to access the options menu. Dip-switch settings should be the third option. Navigating and changing values on the menus is pretty self-explanatory (use arrow keys).
EDIT: If, for some reason, you insist on lr-fba-next for this title, you can access dip-switch settings through RetroArch. Press Select+X when the game is loaded, then choose Quick Menu, and then Options. Use D-Pad to change values.
Upon further reflection, everyone should set their game to 3 cars, and difficulty level should be set to what handicap you feel you need. We'll all compare scores assuming the setting is default (easy), but you do get extra bragging points if the level you set was higher. I don't think we have time for a poll at this point.

My score:
Emulator: FBA Next
-
@R1n0X pretty nice, huh?
you should say that you played in a Windows machine. ;-) -
This game is actually pretty difficult (lr-fba-next) but oh my god, I can't get that SONG out of my head!
-
The scoreboard is now live. You should be able to edit, and put your score on the slide.
-
@obsidianspider Congratulations. Great Custom Case!
-
I could not figure out the Google slides thing so here is my score: 27490

This was fun. It's easy to lump this in with the other maze games of the time, but the smoke screen mechanic and chaotic interaction with the walls really sets it apart and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I won't have time to post mine in the daylight hours, so for better or worse:
