Does Retropie remember multiple controller configs?

Currently I have a USB NES-type controller that I can configure and use no problem. I'd like to get another controller with more buttons that could alternately be used.
Would Retropie recognize which controller is connected and use different mapping for each? Or would each have to be remapped each time?

@jrmymllr yes, it remembers. at least, for all the lr-emulators, and emulationstation itself.
