@DylMc97 If you have not downloaded the full reference set complete with bios files, you will have problems. If you pick the wrong emulator, you will also have problems. E.g, Are you trying to run a neogeo rom without the bios in the same folder? You must follow the Mame Help guide linked above. If you follow the instructions correctly, it will work perfectly. If you download a random unverified rom set or random individual roms, they may or may not work.

@UDb23 I tried following it, all I want is to be able to play PAC man, space invaders and galaga. What romset should be used as I just can't follow it any more. I'm trying to build it for my dad and I'm can't manage to figure it out

to your computer or whatever, just so you access the individual game.zip files. if you only need to play pacman and galaga, you don't need to put the rest on your pi.

@dankcushions best place to find the reference set? I found one but it's like 29gb is it supposed to be that big?

@DylMc97 we can't link to sets, but that sounds about right.

This link will tell you exactly what romset to use and where to place them. Which bit can't you follow?

@DylMc97 once you get the roms in the mame folder make sure you select lr-mame2003 as the emulator (press key right after launching the ROM to access emulator selection options).

                        Use the .078 Mame set.
Google this exact phrase (no quotes): MAME 078 non-merged rom
It is the Please no links to sites that host copyright roms site.
Some kind soul put all the parent pieces into the child ones to make a great set.
(Hopefully this is allowed as I am not directly linking to roms. If it isn't I apologize in advance, and please delete.)
