Number 2 kicking me from game.

I'm running Mame2003 and have been running it for a few months now without any problems. However recently it's developed a problem that I can't seem to solve.
I have an xtension joystick set up as a keyboard. Recently the 2nd player start button, which is set as number 2, is kicking us out of the game when it's pressed. Here's the odd thing. If I turn the system on and play it, it works fine. However if I exit the game via my exit button (escape) and I reenter the game, that's when the problem happens. Pressing the number 2 button exits me from the game.
I have looked at the menu setting and it seems to be set up correctly, as well as checking in the settings for retroarch. That also seems to be set up properly.
I am running kids version so I don't know if that's a bug, but it wasn't happening for a while, so I'm not sure. It worked for quite I while, so it seems odd to suddenly start acting up.
I have reset both mame2003 and retroarch button mappings to see of that's it, but it didn't fix it.
