I have a fresh install of retropie on a raspberry pi 2 b. I have loaded it with some snes, nes and mame roms. Snes and nes worked out of the box, but mame won't work. It seems like it opens then close immediately afterwards. i have tried using both of the MAME emus that are on the pi but i experience the same problem on both of them. Have anyone else experienced this problem?

I haven't but hundreds have. Together with the above link, I suggest this:

          https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2859/how-to-use-mame-with-retropie-help-guide

it opens then close immediately afterwards

This is because you do not have the correct rom file for your emulator of choice. You will see from the above link which files you actually need. Then, with this link, all will become clear.

Now, because the title of your post post is "I can't get MAME to work", I suspect that you have not read this thread before posting: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

Pfff... MAME again. You need to use the proper romset for the emulator you are using.

            https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs

Read that link, it has good tutorials on how to get the correct romset. I can suggest you to use the lr-fbalpha emulator, look for the romset online. It is available, download it, copy it and you're done. No need to convert them etc,

Also I would like to say if you manage to get it work, dont update the mame emulator anymore. Because if you do you will need a newer romset so you need to convert them etc. Can be a pain in the butt.

only lr-fbalpha core keeps parity with current FBA romset. you can safely update the rest without worrying about your romset :)
