EmulationStation not loading on new Retropie 4.1 install

Guys, I am at my wits end and hoping yall can help.
Im making a Retropie for a buddy of mine for Christmas.
I downloaded 4.1, I made a disc image, I wrote it to the sd card, I get the retro pie splash but then it just goes to a terminal. Emulation Station doesnt load, even if I type it in. I just goes black and then back to a prompt.
Can yall please help? Ive done the apt-get update and all that stuff a billion times.

also did you read https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation ?
I suspect you are running the rpi2/3 image on a rpi0/1
