I've mostly been content using AdvMame since it emulates the games that I like just fine (like most of my favourite 2D/Capcom games like The Punisher, Final Fight, Turtles In Time, Chase H.Q. etc.).

But all these games below have issues. The weirdest is a "woozy" and wavy overall sound - as if there is a speed/sync issue. This happens for instance in Elevator Action Returns, Turbo Outrun, NARC and Afterburner.

Note - I have also tried / do use lr-FBA-Next and lr-Mame2003. The performance is similar or sometimes even worse. For instance, people do report that Mortal Kombat works in Mame2003...but for me it's really slow and choppy, unplayable.

Elevation Action Returns (I'd really like to get this one working!)
      NARC
      Afterburner II
      Cisco Heat
      Turbo Outrun
NBA Jam (has issues in every emulator I think, though)
Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II (both are really s-l-o-w and choppy even in Mame2003 - I'd really like to get these working!)
      Shinobi

      My specs:

Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. Not overclocked. Using a pre-made Retropie image (4.1.8, I think). Two USB devices, an Xbox 360 controller with the Microsoft receiver and a wireless keyboard. I only use the latter for configuration tasks and I had the problems before I began using it. I've set up sound so that I'm using SDL2 and only at 44.1kHz.

My PSU is a 5V, 2.1A charger - could this be the problem?

I think my problem is indeed an underpowered power supply (or, actually a charger).

          @ibonihs if you get a lightning bolt or colored square then it's a power issue. I Believe you need a 2.5a psu for a pi3. I'm using a pi2.
I think those games just have issues with the emulators. Fba sucks for mostly anything that's not cps1,2,neogeo. I had better luck with mame2003 for games that ran slow in Fba.
I can just say, for Shinobi, you need to use mame2010 for accurate sound emulation. For mk1 you can use lrmame4all.

@ibonihs I have Elevation Action Returns working in AdvMAME v0.94 though I wouldn't say the audio is 100%. Not sure which version you are using but the audio is poor in v1.4.

I have NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat running without issue in mame4all-pi.

MK2 and Shinobi run fine in lr-Mame2003. It's worth re-testing with the right PSU.
