Controller Remap for Qbert

Hey.
Trying to figure out best way to remap controller for Qbert in mame-libretro. The following forum post recommends remapping a combination of 2 directions to each controller input.

Can't seem to figure out how to assign 2 directions to a single controller input, at least through the GUI. Anyone know how or if this can be done?

It should be able to be done through the MAME 'Tab' menu. I'll give it a shot later tonight and see how it goes.

Reading further down the page, someone posted the image below that details the control scheme. To elaborate on the process, you would launch 'Q*Bet' and once it loads, you press the 'Tab' key on your keyboard. That will bring up a config menu where you will look for a listing that says something like "Set Controls For This Game". You should then see the menu depicted below, where you can input the mapping combination.

Got that far, but how do you assign two different directions to one input?
How do you assign DOWN AND RIGHT to P1 Right?
I can only assign one value to each input.

You just highlight the button listing, press 'Enter' and then map the first direction. Wait for it to register and then simply repeat the process for the second assignment. When you're done, both directions should be listed as being assigned. That should work, but it may be even easier, in that you might just have to highlight the listing and then press the controller direction at the proper diagonal between the two desired directions. I still plan on trying it myself later, so I'll report back afterward.

Just so that we're both on the same page, which version of mame-libretro are you using? Also, by "Most recent build of retropie" does that mean that you've fully updated it from 4.1 to 4.1.12?

I just tried it and it works pretty well. When you select a direction entry in the menu to map it, you must press the diagonals, such as Down and Right at the same time to map the Right directional menu entry. Of course this means that you will now always be controlling the game with the diagonals, but I have to admit that it does make a lot more sense and plays more naturally.
Edit: I imagine this control scheme would carry over nicely to any other similar isometric game such as 'Congo Bongo' for example.
Edit 2: If it continues not to work, post as much information as you know about your controller.

I've just been playing 'Congo Bongo' with that control scheme and that game is still unreasonably hard due only to that odd isometric view. Fun fact; Ikegami Co. Ltd., the company that created 'Congo Bongo' was the same company subcontracted by Nintendo to shadow develop the original 'Donkey Kong'. Nintendo had what was to be an ongoing distribution deal with them, which Nintendo broke after they reverse engineered the DK hardware so that they could distribute 'Donkey Kong Jr.' on their own.
The whole thing was settled privately out of court, but it is strongly believed that the reason Nintendo has never since released the original arcade version of 'Donkey Kong' in any way is because they likely don't have the distribution rights to do so, Much like Disney/Lucasfilm Ltd. doesn't have the distribution rights to the original 'Star Wars' film. It's also funny when you think about it that Ikegami Co. Ltd. would turn around and sell 'Congo Bongo', a clone of Nintendo's most popular game at the time about a guy climbing platforms while dodging projectiles thrown by a giant gorilla, to what would ultimately become Nintendo's biggest rival throughout the 90s, SEGA.
