Purchased my first Pi 3 (retro Pi)...HELP!!!
-
The mini wireless keyboard touchpad combo just arrived in the post after ordering it yesterday...! Not a clue how to hook it up so I can input my wifi. So far have plugged the USB into the device, turned it on, went to wifi settings, but it isn't picking it up. I'll have to figure that one out :/

I'm entitled to ask questions to help me use it. It it the distributor who's the bad guy
The thing is, I think you are missing the point completely. You are entitled to ask questions and request support for your purchase but that request should go to the person you paid. There are an awful lot of posters who appear on this forum ranting about how some 64GB fully loaded image no longer works with this and that. Then you get people ranting about how their controller doesn't work with this game and that game. I know that people get frustrated and that leads them to ignore the https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first thread. Then they start posting about how bad Retropie is and how it doesn't work and is a waste of time and money. At no time do they realise that it is free and is created by experts in their free time. At no time do they realise that they have paid someone who has stolen the work of others for a quick profit. They somehow think that because Retropie is on their "purchased" system, answers should be provided on here as part of their right due to a purchase that has been made by them. The guy who you paid even posts this forum as a support link! (Give him some polish for his brass neck by the way). I and many others who read this forum have exactly the same interest as you do. What everyone is trying to say is that if you want support for Retropie, you simply need to install the software using the latest image from this website as this is the one that is supported and it is this that people know about. You will need to spend some time and learn how to do it by reading the online documentation. It takes about an hour from no prior knowledge. Third party builds which nobody has a clue about are not supported. It is impossible to support software that has been modified in unknown ways and there is of course no motivation to support illegal pre-loaded images anyway. The problem is that individuals such as yourself see the device advertised and are quite rightly impressed by what is offered, so you make a purchase. Most of the time, people then go on and make the incorrect assumption that it is a plug and play device when it is not. If you start reading about arcade roms for example, you will understand what I mean.

I'm yet to have kodi on this device. It is illigal to have that on for movies and sports?
yes, it's illegal to stream movies and sports for free.
Genuine question like the ones about my new controller and working various games were.
as said we won't support any 3rd party installs. if you want help you need to install the retropie image: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation

Buying a third party image and coming to the forum asking for help with it is the equivalent of your friend stealing a car from the dealership, then you buying it from him, and then going to ask the dealer to fix your car for free.
You wouldn't download a car!
Anyways the matter has been hashed enough here. Buying and downloading thousands of ROMs is illegal, using add-ons to watch free TV is illegal.
Surely you understand where we are coming from. Just please respect the licences of the project and the hard work we do in our free time to make this project as amazing as it is.
Read the docs, do your due diligence, and you'll find you'll actually enjoy it far more when it is something you have put together and made your own.

I have that same keyboard and there should be a little USB receiver dongle that you just plug into your RPi and it should just work without doing anything.
I'd be worried about purchasing ones of those pre-filled RetroPie boxes from some stranger down a dark Facebook alley because you don't know what they've done to it...I mean it could have a rootkit or a back door! Who knows?
Anyways, the admins/devs here are very passionate about this project and they put a lot of time into this (and so do the other programmers who write the code for the emulators or the artists who do the graphics, etc.). They all do it for free in their spare time because they want to share their passion with others who have similar passions. These are their babies! I don't know if you have any kids of your own but passionate parents would do anything for their kids! When a total stranger kidnaps your baby and then dolls them up to sell them in sex trafficking, you know that you would go to the ends of the earth for them and there is going to be some shots fired!
If we don't support these RetroPie Traffickers then they won't make money at it and they'll stop selling RetroPie boxes!

You really need to watch what you're saying pal. Comparing my son to a piece of hardware. If anyone ever said anything like that to me in person I think you know exactly what would happen as any parent would. You want to make a point, do so without going to such levels. As you can see, and the same goes for the chap who posted above you, there's been enough discussion around this. You're not dealing with somebody ripping off the distributors and making money off them, but somebody onaware of them, purchasing what they sell then seeking help for the product called retropie on the site iteself.....learning what has happened, then stating they will be using this very site for any further downloads, donations, or anything to do with retropie. You're starting to become a pack of wolves on here, but I suggest you back off now , particularly with comments such as above .
Thank you for the help on the wireless keyboards though . I'm trying to be constructive as I can on here . Please let's just either respond to my questions or not reply at all. There's enough discussion expressed about the issue of the seller and as mentioned unfortunately many more like him. Thanks.

So now you don't like wolves, which are basically just misunderstood dogs? You ARE a monster.
I'm sure everyone is willing to move forward constructively to help you as a new user in any way we can. However, as noted earlier, unofficial images are not supported here, due to the near impossibility of troubleshooting the unknown variables introduced by the seller. If your troubles continue, flashing a fresh copy will be necessary for any of us to help you. Please consider that our valuable time is given freely and this requirement will help expedite the troubleshooting process for us as well as you.
Edit: Well, I see now he's been banned. If it's a temporary thing, perhaps he'll come back with a more considerate agenda.

I haven't felt this range of emotions since The Water Temple.
Ignorance is bliss huh? (But still no defence from the law!)

Yeh, @mediamogul killed a guy with a trident!
Seriously though, you should probably lay low for a while as you will be wanted for murder...
-
@herb_fargus @BuZz as the discussion is mostly the same might it be an idea to add that kind of information ("we only support images from retropie") to the "first read before post article"? With some note about the illegality of pre-made images with Roms

Politics or high school? ; )

I just recently left a retropie facebook group that started off as a support group but slowly overtime turned into a "were making a preloaded image that looks like hyperspin" forum and filled with mostly kids/trolls... (group used to be called Retropie but changed its name to Project HyperPie, best avoided, nothing of value anymore)
What really amazes me is people start off as ignorant to an issue, but when they are informed of the negative facts associated, they immediately go into "defensively and willfully ignorant" mode... they get mad when presented with facts they dont like and start attacking anyone who doesn't subscribe to their version of reality. This is kind of behavior is hitting a fever pitch lately here in the States, doesnt even matter the subject anymore.
People are just terrible.

That was my prom theme.

There's a pre-populated 64gb image on torrent sites called "Project RetroPie" too, which can't help.
It's ironic that the Mini-NES and such have actually (massively) increased the amount of ROM piracy.
-
@Hiroshi Exactly! Nintendo's "popularity by scarcity" tactics have caused an absolute flood of people looking for some way to play old games on a little box, and what comes up on the first google search?
128GB PRE LOADED RETROPIE WITH 65,000 GAMES ROMZ WAREZ OMG LADY GAGA KEYWORD KEYWORD KEYWORD NES-MINI
-
I think it's so much more fulfilling to do it on your own! So east download the retropie image, setup, and add roms. Who needs 65000 games? I'm lucky to play 1 a week with my lil ones!
-
@space-cadet I'm only allowed to play Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends on the Megadrive on mine when my son is about because he likes it.
He knows nothing. That game is shit.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
