Cardboard Mini NES + Nes mini and Famicom mini themes
-
I've finished 3 more systems. No new file to download yet though as I should have a github repository working soon and then hopefully you'll be able to download the themes directly through Retropie.
The 3 new systems I've added are:
Nintendo DS, Odyssey 2, and Arcade. You can see previews below. -
i really like the arcade theme :)
i think you should add the final version on here too, that gives the option then of downloading it via here and directly through retropie.

Thanks - it was fun making the arcade theme.
I can certainly upload them here as well - I have a few more changes to make though as I need to change the way that the scraped artwork is displayed for all the arcade based systems. -
Just want to say thank you for your awesome work!
Dont know if you plan doing all systems, but i hope you could add Amiga to your to do list. :)

It means you a planning on adding two formats to choose for boxart (Flyer and Screenshot)?

No problem - don't know how I didn't think of Amiga - will add it to the list. I haven't tried Amiga emulation yet and I should as I had so many years use out of my old faithful Amiga (I still miss deluxe paint - and did actually continue to use it emulated on my PC not so many years back as there was an iff import plugin for photoshop).

No, you can only pick what artwork is scraped using the scraper itself (sselph scraper for example has setting for choosing which artwork to scrape).
What I'm actually doing is for the arcade systems (mame,fba arcade etc.) is changing the way the artwork is scaled. The way artwork is displayed at the minute is that it's stretched to fill the boxart area - this is fine for consoles as they tend to have standardized box sizes.
The trouble with arcade systems is the artwork scraped could vary wildly so could look very distorted. So instead I will just scale the art to fill the boxart area as much as possible without changing the aspect ratio. This means artwork wont fill the boxart holder but also won't be distorted which I think is the best option.
This may also be the best option for other systems that don't have standardized boxes. -
@ruckage you should hurry up and get that GitHub repo sorted I'm looking forward to it!
Great theme!
-
One that I don't think was mentioned that would be nice to add (low priority of course) would be Daphne as well. But overall love what you're doing so far.
-
For me, this theme, carbon and futura are the best themes around :D
-
@herb_fargus Just my opinion which counts for nowt of course xD & no slight against anyone who goes to the trouble to make themes....
Themes that don't support all available systems shouldn't be added to the download themes section in Retropie.
@ruckage I still havent sorted out my problem with the theme on my main TV. Think I'll just leave it & use the NES theme on the PI Zero thats hooked up to the other TV.
Tested out all the other themes available & they work fine. My TV just doesn't like your theme! xD

Hi. The only reason it wouldn't work is if the pi isn't outputting 1080p on that TV (the TV itself would have no bearing on this, only the resolution the pi is outputting) - this seems logical as you said that games were stretched to fill the screen (they shouldn't be by default). It sounds like for whatever reason the Pi connected to that TV is outputting a 4x3 resolution. You should check your raspberry pi config.txt and check the resolution is set to 1920x1080 there first.

Thanks :) I'm just tinkering with a few things but it should be ready soon - I'll try to stop slacking ;).

It's a valid point but now that retropie runs 80+ systems, it's an awful lot of work to make any theme complete...
-
@herb_fargus Maybe add a note to this Guide with a list of the most popular and demanding systems so the theme makers can create a "complete" theme, i mean, i don't think there is someone that uses anything near 80 systems, correct me if I'm wrong.
-
@herb_fargus 80!? :O
Valid point.
I just brought it up as I was trying out some themes the other day, and one of them I really liked and.....oh...it doesnt support Arcade. Which i thought would be a given.
I really should take a few hours out & try out this theme creation malarkey! XD
@Squilenator Yes. This. :)
Anyway, back to the topic at hand!
NES theme is awesome. I've set up a Pi Zero W with just Nintendo systems (no N64 because theres nay point!, a cheapy SNES controller (thanks PiHut!) & this theme.
Lovin' it! :)
-
@Squilenator well 80 different people may download the theme and each may be running a different system so there isn't really a "complete" list short of what retropie installs. Even then there are regional variants, emulators that emulate multiple platforms etc.
Personally I would prefer theme makers make themes for all the systems but I also understand we all do this in our free time as we see fit. At the very least if someone had a GitHub repository if people want to contribute as a community to that theme it's easier, and then when they want it migrated to the retropie installer it's a simple process.
The unfortunate thing is the majority of people are consumers and not contributors. Pretty much just two blokes (mostly one) work on the code with the occasional contribution here and there. And there are a bunch of themes in varying stages of completion often thrown out into the wind and swiftly abandoned.
-
@herb_fargus @Squilenator the theme variables feature I have been working on has a default theme concept.
-
@jdrassa
That sounds great, a really sensible way of doing things. So if I'm understanding correctly there would be default xml file that would be used for any system without a specific theme.xml and you could then add system specific theming as/if needed. It would certainly speed up theme creation - especially as many themes don't even need system specific changes. -
@jdrassa That sounds really awesome. Wish I had a Raspberry, I'm stuck with windows emulationstation that is forgotten in time and space :c
-
@Squilenator raspberry... the perfect birthday present!
