SNES Controller says its configured but doesn't work. (retropie)

I recently bought the latest 8bitdo snes controller and connected it via bluetooth. I was able to scroll through the menu butas soon as i booted up a game and tried to play with it, it didnt work. The d-pad worked but nothing worked. When i pressed start it appeared to register as A. I looked it up and plenty of people were having the same problem. I tried doing what all of the pages suggested which wasnt easy as they were outdated and the interface is now different. None of the solutions worked. Also i always try to turn 'save configuration on exit' on but when i go back to it, its turned off I tried to update the system but had to interrupt it to get to sleep. the problem has worsened now. When i go to use bluetooth, it cant find it, but doesnt stop searching. i have to use a usb cable now and my problem still isnt fixed. originally there was yellow text saying the controller wasnt configured so i changed the config and now it says that it is configured, but it still doesnt work. Also when i scrape an image or delete a file, when i turn it on the file isnt scraped and the file is still there. please help. ive tried removing the device from the register. ive tried everything and nothing works. if possible please help with the scraping,deleting,save config on exit and bluetooth problems
