Final Fantasy VIII battle menu

I'm having problems trying to get this game working 100%.
well... i got it working, but when i get the a battle, the screen just freezes.
I have read some stuff about changing the emulator to lr-beetle-psx, but this is not possible because i'm running it on a Raspberry Pi!
I have read some stuff about optimizing some settings, but this is all related to other emulation platforms... so i'm a bit clueless :(Also, i'm looking for a method to make saving work. It works for some games like Tekken 2, but not for FF8...
P.S. i'm not in possession of a Windows computer, i only have a Mac laptop :)

FF8 works, if you have any of the graphic "enhancements' turned on though you'll get some strange things happening. I recommend just running it out of the box. I'm currently on disk two just after Laguna's dream sequence, everything is working perfectly!

@laszlogo in the core options (select+X > options) there's an option called something "battle fix"- enable that.

@dankcushions heyyy I know this is pretty old but I'm having this issue and enabling the battle fix thing didn't do anything :(
