MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!
Notes:
-
We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post.
-
There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.
Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result.
These "rules" are constantly being improved!

C'mon boys! Let's play soccer!!!
Not sure how we can compete, but it's fun anyway! -
@meleu A Brazilian liking soccer? I never would have guessed that! ;) I'm actually glad that the games this week are more engaging. Last week's late 70s selections didn't really inspire many people, myself included.
-
@meleu Looks fun !
Maybe we should consider top goals in a single game ?
Or is there a championship ranking in the game ?
Can't try right now. -
@UDb23 gonna try it right now.
Edit:
For those who have a big ROM set in the pi, the game is called "The Ultimate 11", so look at the letter T. -
I'm going to join in this week guys as I'm finally home! YAY!

We can use the default ranking in the game:

@meleu I read that you can get to play against a secret team. Easter Egg in the game. Anybody found it? If not Google will tell you ;-)
-
This week's winner is The Ultimate 11 - The SNK Football Championship
-
Ok, it's on!
Single credit, I take it?
-
@pjft yes, one credit. Any team, even the secret one. :-)

Got the chance to try Ultimate 11 out last night, while multi-tasking doing a fresh WindowsXP install on an ancient laptop, and although I am pretty hopeless at it, I think this game is one of the best ones we've had in the MAMEROW!
Of course I picked Scotland as my team and was soundly thrashed in every game, which is a pretty accurate simulation actually. Then I realised the error of my ways and played as Brazil, and managed to scrape a 1-1 draw against Argentina!
Really good fun, but I'm still not entirely sure what buttons to press, despite the instructions at the start of the game, my tactics so far involve one guy running the entire length of the pitch with the ball before attempting to cannonball it past the goalkeeper. Sometimes it works!
The sudden switch of view when you shoot is a bit disconcerting, but it's a great game.
Didn't even get round to trying out the other two yet.
-
@GtBFilms :) Well done! I'll be playing Portugal, same reasons, but thankfully I think it's a bit better than Scotland.
It is a fun game overall, though I agree it can be a bit "samey". I also end up for the most part running from one end to the other, or trying to pass the ball diagonally-forward to the wings and then back center. Your players will usually try to run to get the ball.
I don't bother with the "run" button much (is there a run button in this version?), mostly passing and shooting. I don't do high passes much either.
Try to shoot when you're near the goal, even if it's not showing the special icon that will change the view, as sometimes you'll get a rebound and can score while the keeper is on the floor.
Overall, I find it to be a good way to spend some time - I'm not sure how it'll be to get a high score, as I'm certainly not the most proficient there, but should be enjoyable nonetheless :) I may get some time on the weekend to try it out!

There's limited (and low Res) artwork available for ultimate 11... Still that didn't stop me from trying to make an overlay for it...
Updates on this tonight ;-) -
Available now in the Repo.
-
@UDb23 looks good! Thanks for the quick turnaround:)
-
@UDb23 would you mind in changing the attack/defense letters to clearer color? Maybe cyan... I think the dark blue in the red background is a bit hard to read. ;-)

Image updated. I just recreated in vectors the instruction sheet scan; original bitmap was too bad to be used directly. Colors were the original... but I agree on that background they were not so readable.
Overall quality is not in line with my own standards but couldn't find any good source files, as said. Therefore I created something looking like the typical NEO GEO machine/cpo.

And fitting perfectly in my arcade cabinet:
