Can't get Xenophobe to work.

Ok I'm looking for a little technical help.
I'm trying to get the Arcade version of Xenophobe to work. (favorite as a kid)
I know people have only really had success with AdvMame, but so far I haven't had much luck. I have tried both versions of AdvMame, but no go.
So:

What version of the ROM should I be looking for?
Are there setting for the Emulator I should be using?
Which emulator Should I be using?
How does one determine what version of the rom I do have?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

the version for the mame emulator you are using. in the case of advance mame, it's MAME 0.94 or MAME 0.106, depending on which version of advance mame you're using. see https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/MAME

i have no experience with advance mame but i would probably start with version 3 if any.

How does one determine what version of the rom I do have?

this is a bit fiddly, but even if you do it's probably the wrong one. i think you would be more successful by obtaining the whole romset for the emulator you want to use. if you want to use advmame v3, you want romset MAME 0.106

Thank you... found a reference set for 0.106..... of course its the entire set. lol have to download the entire thing to determine whether one 380kb file works.... chuckle

@Maritime_Gamer I can confirm that xenophobe from a .106 set works fine in AdvanceMAME 3 and 1.4. You can affect performance and tweak visuals by adjusting the video settings using the MAME GUI (press TAB) once you launch the game.

@caver01 would you confirm that it durante work on any libretro core - 2003, 2010 or FBA?

I recall having it on my list but haven't tried it.

@pjft I cannot confirm that. I don't have every lr- core loaded. I only know it won't work on lr-mame2003. I am thinking a look at compatibility lists might tell us.

Yeah, I'll check that then. I hoped it'd work on 2003, but I'll look into it then. Heard good things about it!

It works in mame2010.

@caver01 Argh, so I got the entire 0.106 reference romset, and tried

advmame-0.94.0
advmame-1.4
lr-fbalphs
lr-imame4all
mame4all

none see to allow it to boot up. The closest I get is either a volume bar or a red screen. Ok, next step.... make sure all emulators are up to date, and see if there are any others I could try.

..this is bugging me as I have been able to get just about everything else running. LOL

@Maritime_Gamer it works in lr-mame2010. You might need the correct romset for that mame, but it works.

I'm ploughing my way through 2 full rom sets and I tried this the other day on mame4all and mame2003 with no luck.
There are so many non-working ROMs that I could try rebuilding but life's too short!

OK, the combination that eventually worked for me was lr-mame2010 and a 0.106 version.
