FBA vs. MAME
-
@barbudreadmon It doesn't run fine with the speed hack. It runs better, but not as well as in MAME. Also, the speed hack affects other games, yes?
-
Konami 4p games has slowdowns on latest fba. More noticable on a pi2 at 1ghz. They're fine in fba 2012. Not sure if this is due to being more accurate or a bug.
-
@pussyfoot @Darksavior All of them run at full speed on my rpi3 @1.3Ghz.
Yes, i suppose if you have older/slower hardware, it is better to use older software.
-
@udb23 Well it does. Most of every game I use for FBA are MAME and they work jusr fine. Of course they are mostly fighting games

ROMS in the end are just different versions of dumps of the actual real game ROMS.
-
@udb23 Huh, did not know that. Thanks

Just tried getting the newest FBA version of Gyruss and replacing the rom file with this. Strangely it still booted with MAME2003 as the default emulator and worked. Should this be possible? Couldn't tell any difference though...

Yes, various older ("classic") arcade ROM dumps have not changed over the years. So even being part of different ROM sets the actual files contained in the zip are the same.
Same happened to me with Space Invaders if I remember well: working with multiple cores.
If there is any improvement on these games with newer versions of the cores is on the emulation (code) side. -

OK, makes sense.
The key mapping is different in FBA though. Even though I'm only utilizing the retroarch.cfg in the ALL folder, FBA uses the Y/X buttons instead of the A/B buttons. Seems odd, but... * shrugs * -

Seems odd, but... * shrugs *Are you still talking about Gyruss ? This is a 1 button game, so the button is mapped to the retropad B button in fbalpha, which is the bottom button in a normal setup (see https://wiki.libretro.com/index.php?title=RetroPad). If it's not for you, either your controller is not properly mapped, or you have some remapping messing things up.
-
@barbudreadmon Yes, still Gyruss. I'm not having any retroarch mappings in either the fba or arcade folder. Only the one in the all folder..
-
You also gotta keep in mind with regards to FBA the MAME code the drivers are built from is newer in some cases bang upto date, although game support
and performance are important keep in mind alotta games are better emulated in FBA vs older MAME for example protection simulation code vs proper
dumps of the Protection MCU chips and data, Bubble Bobble springs to mind the enemy movements and logic for example will be totally wrong in older
MAME but 100% correct in FBA something to consider ;)Not sure if you guys have an Raine port..?? but that would open up a whole new catagory around performance as with some games that emulator
beats all others hands down :) -

What's your exact version of lr-fbalpha ?
-
@barbudreadmon Just updated yesterday, so I guess it would be 0.2.97.42 like the romset, the game's from.

I'm experiencing a lot of stuttering in graphics and sound on both MAME2003 and FBA...Both games run at full speed with fba on my pi3@1.3Ghz, for gunbird2 you need to enable the speedhack in the dipswitches.
Gyruss fire button is properly mapped to retropad B.Give some information on your setup (rpi version ? overclocked ? fba version ? controllers you are using ? autoconfig ? mapped manually ? ... ), and perhaps we'll be able to help.

Good to know, thanks. Will add these tips in the global "best core" xls file.

@barbudreadmon Once you have updated FBA and Mame2003, what's the best way to check what version the emulator is once installed?

You can see the exact version of the running core at the bottom left of the retroarch menu
