@barbudreadmon Before I bought the DS4 I had considered the FC4, but this topic: https://www.reddit.com/r/StreetFighter/comments/5lowok/any_durable_fightpad_optionssolutions/
turned me off (dpad durability issues).
I just want a great dpad, 6 face buttons and durability. That's why I was hoping Retrobit would use the same parts/materials as the original Saturn controllers.

@beldar tell me about. I use an xbox360 controller. It's dpad must have been an afterthought when they designed it because its like manipulating a brick.

@barbudreadmon Hori makes some good d'pads. My current favorites based on my performance in very old titles are the Hori Poken Tournament USB controller and the plain brand name Daulshock4 from Sony.

The Sony controller is kind if a compromise. Is has a solid d'pad, but not amazing like the Poken. But it is also wireless, can be used on modern games, etc.

I literally have a dozens of controllers that I've testrd pretty brutally. Those two are the ear winners for me.

@bobharris i bought my first FC4 ~1.5 years ago, the second one 2 months later (i was really happy with the first one), i don't have issues yet so i would still recommend it.

@barbudreadmon I guess you were lucky.
http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/211127/so-about-the-latest-hori-fighting-commander-pad is another thread about it. I checked and here in Europe they currently sell for at least € 65..pretty steep for a pad without any advanced features. Maybe the pad is discontinued as I can only find them on ebay and amazon.

These are listed as retro bit and everyone keeps saying retrolink. And if i look at images of controllers they show controllers by both retro bit and retrolink that look nothing like each other.

@bobharris It was a lot cheaper before (around 40-45€ for this FC5). It does not seem discontinued, hori usa website is selling it 40$ . There are probably no more stock in europe.

@edmaul69 Good point. I got them confused. Retrobit is calling their controllers dual link...not Retrolink. :-) I edited my first post.

@bobharris It looks like I got mixed up too. My experience is with Retrolink controllers and they were not good. If Retrobit is a separate entry, then I don't know anything about their quality.

                            @beldar
It's quite confusing. For example this Amazon listing: https://www.amazon.com/RetroLink-RetroBit-Nintendo-Controller-Gamepad-Joystick/dp/B01A2A0AES
It looks like a Retrolink controller, so why are they also calling it a Retrobit controller..

Edit: They are definitely related. On their website you can find a Retrolink controller:
                            http://retro-bit.com/saturn-controller-pc-usb-black.html

@bobharris Ugh.. That is one of the exact Retrolink controllers I purchased. It was of pretty poor quality. It worked when I plugged it in and all the buttons registered, but those are the nicest things I can say about it.

Like many retro gamers I would love a line of really high quality SNES, NES, Genesis/Saturn controllers, but I have a hard time trusting them with my money.

@beldar I will wait untill there are some reviews online about these official Sega Saturn controllers. Maybe Retro-bit step their game up...maybe not. :-) The packaging and the design of the controllers look like the real deal..but we'll see about the rest.

Were you able to use the Retrolink controller properly on your Pi? I read it has difficulties with Linux systems.

I wish 8bitdo did them instead. They could but they didn't and I don't understand why. They still can of course...

@bobharris Yes, I got the Retrolink Saturn controller to work with Retropie. I had no trouble with that, just plug and play. It was the quality of the controller physically that was the problem.

@matchaman I tried hard to like 8bitdo. They make some really neat looking stuff and their build quality is really nice. My problem is their d'pads are super stiff and crispy. I don't have the reflexes I did 25 years ago, so I need all the mechanical advantages I can get.

@beldar By the way I agree the Dual Shock 4 has a great dpad, but did you know there are differences even between Dual shock 4 v2 controllers? I noticed it yesterday. Last october I went to Japan and bought a DS4 v2 there. Yesterday I bought a second DS4 V2 here in the Netherlands. The Japanese dpad surface is super smooth, mirrorlike..feels soft to the touch and very slippery (which I like, because your thumb has to slide over it). It felt like that from the start, not through use. The European dpad has more of a matte finish and does not feel near as smooth. I never get these differences for each market. Of course it could also be a minor update within the DS4 design, but that's hard to tell.

The original sega saturn 3d controllers remind me of the original xbox duke controllers. They look uncomfortable.

@bobharris That's interesting about the regional differences in the DS4. I have two of the updated version from local stores here in the USA. They both have the smooth untextured d'pads as well as a slight cutout of the touch pad that allows light through. Otherwise, the seem identical to the original version to me. I really enjoy them, they don't exactly feel retro, but the are high quality and get the job done.
