Super Smash Bros N64 title screen problem.

Raspberry pi 2B
5v (from USB)
RetroPie 4.1 - I think
16gb sd card, written used Etcher.
SNES USB controllers.
None ?Hey, I'm new on this website. But anyways, so I set up my pi a couple weeks ago, and it was all working great, no problems or anything. But just 3 days ago, I tried to run Super Smash Bros (N64), and it won't work. It would boot all the way to the title screen and intro, but when I press start, it won't respond or anything. I tried multiple controllers, I reconfigured the controllers, deleted and reinserted the ROM with no success. Please help.

Did you try different emulators for this game? Look here https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Nintendo-64/ and https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Wjzbu90l6eCEW1w6ar9NtfyDBQrSPILQL5MbRSpYSzw/edit#gid=0
In the spreadsheet it says for Super Smash Bros following: "Gles2N64 Stable Works great with Gles2N64 however not all polygons are rendered. (My Yoshi / Zelda have blank faces lol) Only minor lag (rarely) in-game, a decent amount in the menu but who cares about that." -
So the ROM won't start whatsoever now, so I can't edit the emulator. (Which I've already done.)

@thelostsoul I did.

@heshy Which Mupen variant are you using? You can select emulator for each game individially if you click a button while game starts. Not sure.if you disabled that menu while starting game. Especially on N64 there are many Games not working good and even those are working may need switching to different emulator and then still they may be problematic. Check the links wirh compatibility informations I gave you.
-
@thelostsoul I can't access the emulator selection menu, because it crashes before I can. (I'm not sure either.)
-
@heshy Does it work if you use Lr-mupen64?

@heshy I thought you said it makes it all the way to the games title screen? You change emulators before the game even loads via the runcommand menu (that little message that pops up before the game launches)
Are you overclocked?

This post is deleted! -
Ah yes, I am a little confused too. Do the game start and you get the title screen?
-
@thelostsoul Right, sorry, It did initially go to the title screen, but I overclocked it and the ROM stopped working then.
-
@heshy Then most probably the overclocking is the problem. What case and cooling do you have? What overclocking settings did you do?

That might have been an important nugget of info to share ;)
Remove your overclock and try again. Does it still freeze?
-
I set the overclock preset to High, (1000MHz, 2 overvolt). I just set it back to 900MHz, 0 overvolt. But when I start the game, it goes black, and after a couple of seconds crashes, and goes back to EmulationStation.
-
@heshy Okay, this is confusing.
At first my problem was this: I would start the ROM, everything runs correctly all the way to the title screen and intro. Then when I tried to press START to play the game, nothing happened.
Now, my problem is that the ROM will not start at all, it goes black, then crashes, I can't even change the emulator. -
@heshy did you remove the core_freq overclock as well?
Did other N64 games work fine? Is it just super smash that you had issues with?
