On my 3B Retropie setup I had PS3 controllers connected using the sixasis software installed through Retropie-Setup. I have now given in and purchased a 3B+ and begun the new build. From what I understood, you could not connect/pair other bluetooth devices after installing the sixaxis drivers without uninstalling them, and then reinstalling after pairing, but it wouldn't always stick after reboots.

Has there been any changes with this or alternative drivers that would work? Is it something that only ties up the onboard bluetooth which an external dongle for BT could alleviate? I know buying a peripheral with a dedicated dongle would be a solution but many devices no longer come with 2.4ghz dongles as BT is so popular and many of the products I wish to use fall into the no-dongle category as well.

There's an ongoing PR for making PS3 work as an ordinary BT gamepad - without hijacking the BT stack and disabling other devices. See this topic. I don't think it's merged into the current RetroPie release, but you could try installing it and give it a try.

@mitu Thank you, I will definitely look into this and test it out this weekend.

I apologize for not replying sooner, I have not been getting site notifications for some odd reason.
