How to know what button is what
-
Anyone know of a method where i can figure out what button is assigned to X, Y, etc? I have my buttons connected to an Ipac2 connected via USB to the Pi3.

Have you read https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/ ? I think it provides a good description on how the controller's inputs are mapped to a an emulator gamepad scheme.

I'm not sure what you mean. When you first installed RetroPie and configured the controller, you decided what button is a, b, etc. If you want to change it, for most of the LibRetro emulators you can just reconfigure the controller in EmulationStation unless you have overrides and complex configs.

@simonster for instance in lr-vice, I load a game and then go to the retroarch menu to configure specific settings for that game. One of settings is the controller buttons where for example on Bruce Lee I need to assign F7 to a specific button on the control panel of the cabinet so i can start a game, but since I don't know which button it which on the control panel, I can't do it.

You know what you wired up to the ipac2 terminals so therefore you know what function each button has according to the instructions for the ipac.
