    Hi there!

I wanted to try retropie on my raspberry, and it's not working. But the thing is that, it's only not working with retropie !
I can use it with other distro like raspbian or OSMC without any troubles, but not retropie ?!?!!???

Everytime it fail on booting, asking to change the "pi" user password for security risk...

    °___°

What could be wrong with my raspberry if it's not working with all distro ? Because I swap my retropie SD card on another raspberry and it work fine !

    That's in advance for support

@lawarmotte the RetroPie RPI image is actually Raspbian Lite, so I don't see how it would 'work with Raspbian, but not retropie'.
How did you install RetroPie - please provide more information as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

        hi !

Maybe I should have started with my hardware: I'm using a GameHat kit / raspberry B+ 512

Ok so, I used balena etcher to create the SD card, with the latest Game-HAT-retropie-4.4-rpi2_rpi3-180713.img
The SD card is working because I tested it on another rapsberry.

During boot it failed to launch Emulstation, and I have this message showing up:

"SSH is enabled and the default password for the 'pi' user has not been changed. This is a security risk - please login as the 'pi' user and type 'passwd' to set a new password."

@lawarmotte Looks like auto-login is disabled and that's why Emulationstation is not starting. What happens if you log in ?

If I log the 'pi' user, then screen goes black and show me the error message again.

Should I change the 'pi' password in raspi-config ?

@lawarmotte The message about the pi user's password is not an error, just a warning. That's not why that Emulationstation doesn't load.
Since we're not supporting 3rd party images, ask the provider of the image about it - as far as we know, Emulationstation might not be installed.
Alternatively, install the standard RetroPie image from retropie.org.uk/download and try to get it running.

EDIT: you can save the /boot/config.txt image from the image you're using and add the display configuration options to the RetroPie image, just so the display is properly configured.

EDIT: Take a look at https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#why-emulationstation-doesnt-start-automatically-after-an-update, it might be similar to your problem.

I tryed the FAQ trick, but still doesn't work.

In fact what's bothering me is that if I take an other raspberry it work perfect ! So the SD installation is ok nothing's wrong here...

What hardware problem on a raspberry could cause that auto login error ??

@lawarmotte said in Raspberry defective with RETROPIE ??:

What hardware problem on a raspberry could cause that auto login error ??

It's not a hardware thing - as explained in the FAQ it's the systemd package updates that disable the auto-login. It should come up only after you update your OS/Linux packages, but not on a fresh image.
I think you should try out the RetroPie image from retropie.org.uk/download instead of the image you're using right now.

@lawarmotte wait are you using the original pib+? It's not compatible with the retropie 2-3 image. You need to use the 0-1 image.

Ooooh bloody hell !! I got it now ! Damn it I was using the 2-3 image since my other raspberry is a model 2!

I'm so stupid... I'm gonna download the 0-1 version right away
